Last Time Out: Butler celebrated Senior Night in grand fashion Thursday night in Indianapolis, downing #25 Xavier by the score of 3-0 to capture the No. 3 seed in BIG EAST Tournament. Senior Vincent Mitchell had two goals in the contest. After Xavier took the first four shots of the match and forced several corner kicks, Butler rebounded. After a long ball was played in to the top of the box in the 12th minute, a failed clear by the Musketeers left the ball at the feet of David Goldsmith. His left foot found the net for a 1-0 lead. Mitchell added two second-half tallies. The Bulldogs needed the win over Xavier, as the Musketeers entered the match ahead of Butler in the standings.
Senior Night Festivities: Jeff Adkins, Mike Kozielek, Vincent Mitchell, and Caleb Postlewait suited up for their final regular season contest in a Bulldog uniform with Thursday's match against Xavier. Senior Mitch Ostrowski only appeared in four matches due to injury. He will apply for a medical redshirt and anticipates returning for the 2016 season.
First Time Around: Butler improved to 2-0 in BIG EAST play with a 2-0 win at Providence Oct. 3.
Vincent Mitchell netted the game-winner. The win kept Butler undefeated at that point in the season at 6-0-3.
Just over a minute into the second half, Mitchell broke a scoreless tie, out-running the Friars defense to control a ball down the right side of the field. He beat the Friars keeper to the short side from a tough angle, finding the bottom right corner. Marco Charalambous served up the long ball to Mitchell.
The Bulldogs picked up an insurance goal 12 minutes later as
Jeff Adkins served up a free kick that
Eric Leonard headed toward the PC goal from just inside the 18. The ball caught the crossbar and came straight down.
Kieran Geldenhuys headed in the ball just in front of the goal line for the first goal of his Butler career and a 2-0 lead.
Against the Friars: Sunday's match will be just the fourth between the two programs. Butler owns a 2-1 advantage after taking a 2-0 decision in Providence earlier this season. Providence earned a 3-2 win in 2013 with the Bulldogs responding for a 2-0 decision in 2014.
