Box Score WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The first game of Butler's spring break trip was a wild one that included 30 runs, 33 hits and six errors. At the end of the day, the Falcons came out on top with a 16-14 victory at Chain O'Lakes Park.
Drew Small led Butler in a losing effort on Tuesday with a 2-for-5 performance from the plate that included two doubles, a team-high three RBIs and three runs scored. Small led off the top of the order and was placed in left field defensively.
The bottom of the lineup was also good against Bowling Green with Garrett Christman and Tyler Houston combining for five hits, and seven runs scored.
Butler scored four runs in the top of the second, four in the fifth and four more in the ninth, but couldn't pull off the comeback as they fall to 3-11 on the year. Bowling Green built a lead by scoring five runs in the bottom of the first. They added three in the fourth, four in the fifth and three in the eighth to earn their fifth win of the season.
Peter Nyznyk got hit hard on the mound in his second start of the season. The left-handed senior was tagged with nine runs in 3.2 innings of work. Five of the nine runs were earned as Bowling Green racked up nine hits. Nyznyk only walked one and struck out four and despite his rough outing, he was able to exit the game with no decision.
Tuesday's loss was pinned on Tyler Rathjen who moves to 0-1 on the year with his lone inning of work. The Falcons scored three earned runs off three hits against Rathjen who would then be replaced by Kyle Allen.
Much like Rathjen, Allen was knocked around by Bowling Green as the Falcons scored four more earned runs off five hits in his 2.2 innings of action. The final Bulldog to see time on the mound was Bobby Napoleon who ended the game by recording the final two outs.
Wes Rickenberg got the win for BGSU. The save went to Tony Landi, his first of the year.
The top four players in the BGSU lineup were great against Butler. Lead-off man Brandon Howard went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. Following him was shortstop Nick Glanzman who went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
The big hitters delivered for the Falcons as Trey Keegan and Randy Righter each posted three RBI's for Bowling Green at the three, four spots. Keegen hit the only home run of the game and also scored a game-high four runs. Righter had two doubles in the contest to help post his three RBI's.
The bottom of the first featured a two-out rally from the Falcons as the team scored five runs off three hits. Howard scored the first run of the game, but a fielding error would extend the inning which resulted in the early 5-0 lead.
The Bulldogs responded immediately with four runs off four hits in the top of the second. Houston doubled down the leftfield line to score two and Small recorded a double just one batter later to send Houston home. Small would eventually come around to score off an RBI single from Chris Marras.
The Bulldogs took advantage of a BGSU fielding error in the third to score two unearned runs. Christman scored off the miscue and Small's second double of the game allowed Houston to score once again making the game 6-5 in favor of BU.
BGSU would go on to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning, and would grab a three-run advantage in the bottom of four. A pair of singles to go along with a wild pitch would send Howard, Keegan and Righter home to score in the inning.
The top of the fifth was more chaos as Butler scored four runs off three hits. The inning was extended by two BGSU errors making all of the runs unearned. Austin Miller doubled in the inning and Chris Maranto came up with an RBI single to center.
That surge was once again countered by the Falcons as Bowling Green scored four runs in the bottom of five, highlighted by the Keegan two-run home run.
Action slowed down in the sixth and seventh innings, but would pick back up in the bottom of the eighth with BGSU pouring on three more runs. Righter delivered a double down the leftfield line to score two and Brian Bien would get Righter home with a single through the left side.
The Bulldogs didn't go quietly in the ninth as they posted four runs off one big hit from Will Amador. The 'Dawgs loaded the bases off a throwing error, a hit batter, and a walk. The first run came home off a wild pitch and Maranto would walk to once again load the bases.
After a BGSU pitching change, Amador stepped in the batter's box to record a two-RBI single to centerfield that scored Miller and Small.
A groundout from Gehrig Parker notched the first out of the inning, but still allowed Amador to move into scoring position. He was eventually replaced on the base paths by pinch runner Brodie Meyer.
Butler's final run of the game crossed home plate off a Quincy Quintero groundout for out number two in the inning. The high scoring affair would then come to an end with another groundout, this time to shortstop.
The Bulldogs will stay in Winter Haven, Fla. for the remainder of the week with games scheduled against Long Island, Bucknell (2x) and Illinois State.
