Box Score INDIANAPOLIS – The Bulldogs scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning to defeat Marian on Tuesday afternoon by the final score of 5-0. The Bulldogs have now won two-straight, taking their overall record to 5-14.
Connor Mitchell tossed the first three innings of the game for Butler, but the win ended up going to Tyler Rathjen. BU pitched by committee on Tuesday, sending seven different players to the mound at MU Ballpark. Every single arm recorded at least one strikeout as the team posted their first shutout victory of the season.
Ryan Wojciechowski and Garrett Christman led the team from the plate with each player recording two hits. Wojciechowski went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while Christman also posted a 2-for-4 day from the plate with one RBI.
The decisive fifth inning got started with Gehrig Parker reaching base after a fielding error by the Knights first baseman. Austin Miller followed in the order with a single to left that got Butler back to the top of the lineup with no outs.
Each baserunner was able to advance on a wild pitch with Drew Small at the dish and the Bulldogs would quickly load the bases after Small was hit by a pitch.
With the bases loaded and nobody out, Butler's first run of the game came home off a deep sacrifice fly from Tyler Houston. The true freshmen sent a pitch into deep centerfield allowing every runner to advance with Ryan Wojciechowski on deck.
The Knights made a pitching change after the sac fly, but it wouldn't slow down the Bulldogs as Wojciechowski singled to left field to make the game 2-0. Chris Marras would tack on another run with a sac fly to left field that allowed Small to tag up and score.
The fifth inning would stay alive with a two-out single from Michael Fries and an RBI double down the right field line by Christman. Butler's fifth and final run would come home on yet another Marian miscue as the Knight shortstop made a fielding error that allowed Fries to come home.
The Knights were limited to just three hits on the day while Butler walked away with eight. The midweek game allowed Butler to use a variety of arms out of the bullpen as Danny Pobereyko, Kyle Allen, Bobby Napoleon, Josh Goldberg and Peter Nyznyk all got an inning of work in against Marian.
The Bulldogs will look to keep this momentum rolling into the weekend as they host a trio of opponents at Bulldog Field, starting with a 3:30 game vs. Cleary on Friday, March 20.
