Bulldogs Win Home Finale 4-3

Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Butler baseball team finished the home slate on a positive note by defeating the Eastern Illinois Panthers by the final score of 4-3 on Tuesday night. The Panthers tied the game at 3-3 in the top half of the eighth, but sac fly from Garrett Christman in the bottom of the inning sent Gehrig Parker home to score the game-winning run.

The Bulldogs won the game despite getting out-hit in the contest 12-6. BU used the entire roster both offensively and defensively with only Christman remaining in the game for all nine innings. In the end Christman would push BU over the top, recording one RBI during his two official at-bats.

The win went to Luke Johnson and the three-out save was recorded to Danny Pobereyko. The end of the game featured Pobereyko getting two quick outs before allowing a base knock to left field. With the game on the line, the Panthers decided to put a pinch runner in the game. That decision would cost them as Pobereyko picked off the newly added player to end the game.

In total, BU used seven pitchers in the contest to help keep EIU off the scoreboard. The start went to Connor Mitchell, a true freshman that logged the first 3.1 innings of work. Mitchell would eventually hand the ball off to Kyle Allen who came in and got the second out of the inning in the fourth off a backwards K. The Panthers would get one run home in the inning, but Allen eluded further trouble by ending the inning with a fly out.

Eastern Illinois' run in the fourth was their second of the game, yet they still faced a one run deficit with Butler scoring one in the second and two in the third. Ryan Wojciechowski got the ball rolling with a lead-off double down the left field line in the second. The double gives Wojciechowski 19 on the season, a total that ties the Butler single-season record.

Wojo stood on second with Chris Marras following him in the lineup. Marras took over the DH role today with Will Amador getting the start at catcher. Marras sent a deep fly into center that allowed Wojciechowski to tag up and reach third base. The advancement was vital for the first run as Wojciechowski would once again tag up, this time on a sac fly from Michael Fries to knot the score at 1-1.

Butler broke the tie in the third with a pair of extra base hits. Austin Miller doubled to left field and quickly came around to score off Drew Small's triple to right. The inning would be extended with a sac fly from Houston that allowed Small to tag up and score.

Action would pick back up in the eighth with the Bulldogs clinging to a one-run advantage. Butler would once again make a pitching change at the start of the inning, putting Luke Johnson on the bump in replacement of Nick Morton.

The half inning would begin offensively with a single to shortstop from Alex Cain. A sac bunt from Matt Dunavant would advance the runner and a costly error on the BU second baseman would tie the game at 3-3.

Cale Hennemann sent a ground ball to second base where Brodie Meyer had trouble handling it. The miscue would lead to a rushed throw where the baseball would eventually end up on the fence just past the first baseman. The errant throw allowed Cain to come around and score the unearned run, but Christman's sac fly in the eighth would make that all go away with Butler pulling out the 4-3 win.

The Bulldogs will head into the final weekend of the regular season with a three-game series at Xavier. Conference seeding for the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament will be on the line as the 'Dawgs head to Cincinnati to face the Musketeers beginning on Thursday at 3 p.m.
