Box Score OMAHA – The Bulldogs took a 77-49 loss at Creighton on Sunday moving their overall record to 7-9. Brittany Ward scored a team-high 16 points in the loss, but the Bulldogs were limited to just 35% shooting on 19 made field goals.
Ward came out hot and scored 12 of her 16 points in the first half. She knocked down two 3-point field goals in the game and just missed a double-double by grabbing nine rebounds. Fellow freshman forward Tori Schickel was also active on the glass with eight boards. She added 10 points and a steal.
Creighton had 11 different student-athletes score at least two points against Butler with MC McGrory leading the charge with 15. Audrey Faber added 13 and Bailey Norby was in the book with 10.
The two evenly matched teams went back and forth early in the contest, but a 7-2 run from Creighton at the close of the first quarter would give the Bluejays a 20-15 lead. That scoring run would grow to 16-2 with Creighton scoring the first nine points of the second quarter. Ward momentarily stopped the momentum with her second 3-point field goal of the game, followed by a jumper that cut the deficit to nine. The Bluejays would still hang on to an 11-point lead at the break 36-25.
The third quarter was more of the same for Creighton as they came out to score the first eight points to expand on their lead. They won the third quarter 25-10 to take full control of the game. Butler came up with 14 points in the fourth quarter thanks to seven from Belle Obert. Obert was the third Bulldog to reach double figures with 11 points.
Butler will return to action with a home game against nationally-ranked DePaul on Friday, Jan. 15. Tip on the BIG EAST Digital Network is set for 7 PM.
