@ButlerVB Falls to Creighton in Straight Sets

Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Butler volleyball team took a 3-0 setback to Creighton on Saturday night. The Bluejays, who are receving votes in the latest national poll, knocked off the Bulldogs inside Hinkle Fieldhouse 25-22, 25-23, 25-12.

Makayla Ferguson and Anna Logan led Butler by each recording a double-double. Logan finished the contest with a match-high 16 kills to go along with 11 digs. Ferguson set up the action with a team-high 33 assists. Defensively she added 12 digs and a block.

The third member of the team to reach double figures in the digs category was libero Taylor Takeda. She tallied 16 digs while setting up two assists.

The Bulldogs used a 6-2 scoring run to knot the first set at 10-10. BU went to Logan early and often in the opening stages. The sophomore recorded seven of Butler's first 11 kills of the contest.

Back and forth action continued, pushing the scoreboard to 20-18 in favor of Butler. The battle-tested Bluejays recovered by posting two-straight points, which resulted in a Butler timeout.

The Creighton scoring run moved to 4-0 out of the stoppage giving CU a 22-20 advantage. Logan would end the streak with a kill, but Lauren Smith would match her effort to give Creighton the two-point cushion.

Whitney Beck cut the deficit to one with a kill, but the set would go to Creighton after back-to-back kills from Jaali Winters.

Winters cooled off in set two allowing Butler to grab a 5-1 lead. The outside hitter recorded four attack errors, which led to a CU timeout.

Butler's early lead would hold through the midway point, but a 4-0 Creighton scoring run would put the Bluejays back within striking distance at 16-15. Taryn Kloth was responsible for the serve during the run while Marysa Wilkinson came up with a pair of kills.

Butler momentarily stopped the momentum with a timeout. The strategy paid off with CU committing an attack error out of the break. The Bluejays wouldn't go away however as the run extended to 8-1. A Creighton service ace would tie the game at 17-17 and a BU ball-handling error would give CU their first lead of the second set.

The two evenly matched teams came together once again at 20-20, but a 2-0 run from the visitors would force Butler into calling their second timeout of the set. Butler executed the game plan out of the break and got the ball to Brooke Gregory who lifted the team with a kill. Gregory came back moments later to record another kill in crunch time to tie the game at 23-23.

Butler was not able to hold on however as Lydia Dimke pushed Creighton to set point with a kill up the middle of the court and her well-timed assist to Wilkinson would give Creighton the 2-0 lead.

Set three started to take form after a 5-1 scoring run from Creighton. The Bluejays broke a 5-5 tie to take a 10-6 lead. A Butler timeout didn't slow down the attack as CU added three consecutive points out of the break. Butler's final timeout of the contest came at 13-6. The 'Dawgs put an end to the scoring run this time as Bri Lilly sent a kill to the hardwood.

In the end, the deficit was too much to overcome as Creighton remained undefeated in BIG EAST play with a 25-12 win. The loss moves Butler's overall record to 13-7, with a 2-2 mark against conference foes.

The Bulldogs will return to action on Wednesday with an away match at DePaul (1PM). The next home match will follow on Saturday, Oct. 8. Butler will host Xavier at 4 PM.
