INDIANAPOLIS – The DePaul Blue Demons defeated the Butler Bulldogs 1-0 Thursday night at the Butler Bowl to remain unbeaten in BIG EAST conference play. With the setback, the 'Dawgs fall to 8-4-2 and 1-2-1 in the BIG EAST.
DePaul came into Thursday's contest leading the BIG EAST in points, goals and assists, but it was their stout defense that helped secure the win. The Blue Demons limited the Bulldogs to just one shot in the match, which came in the final minute of play off the foot of
Serina Kashimoto.
"They're a very good team in terms of their organization, athleticism and the way they compete," Co-Head Coach
Rob Alman said. "They got some special players up top, who we did a pretty good job of handling for most of the night. I just thought it was an unacceptable performance on our end in terms of our possession tonight."
After a scoreless first-half, DePaul peppered
Hannah Luedtke with shot after shot to begin the final 45 minutes of action. In one stretch of play, the Blue Demons forced Luedtke to make three consecutive saves at point-blank range.
In the 59th minute, Franny Cerny finally found the back of the net for DePaul off a pass from Kelli Hubly for her sixth goal of the season, which proved to be the game winner.
The Blue Demons outshot the Bulldogs 14 to one on the night. Luedtke finished the match with seven saves, five of which came in the second-half.
"Hannah's consistently really good," Alman added. "Everyone has a great amount of confidence in her at this point and we almost expect her to be solid, especially with a lot of the set plays DePaul takes that are just smashed right down the goalkeepers throat and there are a lot of numbers coming in around her. I thought she was really commanding in dealing with those and was really solid."
Butler continues BIG EAST play this Sunday when they head east to face No. 6 Georgetown. The contest begins at 1 p.m. and will be streamed live on BEDN.
