@ButlerWBB Upsets St. John's on Senior Day 62-58

Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS – The Bulldogs came up big on Sunday afternoon by defeating St. John's 62-58 in the 2015-16 home finale. Blaire Langlois scored a team-high 16 points in her final home game at Hinkle Fieldhouse as the Bulldogs shocked the second-best team in the conference to earn their fourth conference win of the year.

Butler led for a majority of the game, but the Johnnies wouldn't go quietly in the fourth. A 14-point BU advantage quickly dropped to just two with two minutes to play. Langlois got to the line for a pair to make it a two possession game, but a layup from Imani Littleton kept STJ alive.

The Bulldogs got a huge lift at the 1:00 mark as sophomore Sydney Buck stepped up to hit her third 3-point field goal of the game, a shot that moved the lead back up to five. Danaejah Grant responded for St. John's by scoring four-straight that trimmed the lead back down to one.

With the game on the line, Butler got the ball to Langlois who headed to the charity stripe with seven seconds. She hit her first freebie to make the score 60-58. The second attempt was off but Tori Schickel battled for an offensive rebound and kicked the ball out to Alexa Bailey who would be fouled with just two seconds left. Bailey made each free throw giving BU the four-point win.

Free throw shooting was a big factor in the outcome of the game with BU hitting 13 of their 16 attempts and St. John's shooting just 39 percent from the stripe (9-23).

Langlois hit three 3-point field goals on her way to scoring 16 points. She added a team-high six assists, three rebounds and a steal to her stat line. Fellow senior Belle Obert posted five points and five rebounds before fouling out with five fouls.

STJ relied on Grant to lead the team offensively. The senior scored a game-high 27 points on 10-of-17 shooting. She recorded her fourth double-double of the season by adding 11 rebounds.

The two teams ended the opening 10 minutes deadlocked at 12-12. Butler's confidence would grow however in the second quarter as they beat STJ 17-9 in the following 10 minute stretch.

Nicole Orr came up with a three-point play in the final seconds of the second quarter and the Bulldogs would capitalize on another and one opportunity at the start of the third quarter with Brittany Ward attacking the rim. BU won each quarter to build their lead for the home stretch.

They ended up needing every point as St. John's picked up their defensive intensity to win the fourth 26-17. The Johnnies played full-court trapping defense over the final 10 minutes of the game which created multiple BU turnovers. The 'Dawgs ended the game with 17 miscues, but their top notch effort on the defensive end would keep them in the game.

Butler used a zone defense against one of the top scoring offenses in the BIG EAST and it worked. Grant blew up for her game-high 27 points, but Aliyyah Handford was limited to just 11, five points under her average.

While St. John's relied on Grant throughout the entire 40 minutes, Butler used a total team effort on the offensive end to shoot 41 percent for the game. All eight players that entered the game scored at least three points, giving BU the upper hand in bench points 17-10. BU also ended the game with 15 assists on 21 made field goals.

Butler will look to keep this momentum rolling into next weekend as they prepare for Georgetown and Villanova on the road. The following weekend is the start of the 2016 BIG EAST Tournament.
