Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Butler baseball team won for the first time this season on Sunday. After dropping the first two games of the weekend at Charleston Southern, the Bulldogs fought back to win the final game 4-3 in 11 innings.
Butler struck first in the second inning when Chris Marras doubled to lead off the inning. Two batters later, he scored on a fielding error putting the Bulldogs up 1-0.
That score would hold until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Charleston Southern's Cole Murphy led off the inning with a home run off of Nick Morton. The Buccaneers would put two more men on base that inning, but were unable to take the lead until the next inning.
After the Bulldogs went down 1-2-3 in the top half of the frame, Charleston Southern struck for another run in the bottom of the sixth. Brandon Burris led off the inning with a double to left center. After a single advanced him to third, Chris Singleton brought Burris home on a sacrifice fly to center field.
After only compiling two hits through seven innings, the Bulldogs needed a spark, and that came in the eighth inning, when the Bucs opted to take out starting pitcher Jon Piriz. Piriz had given up one unearned run in seven innings of work with only one walk and eight strikeouts.
The Bulldogs would score two runs in the top of the eighth. Gehrig Parker led off the inning with a single. A sacrifice bunt by Cole Malloy advanced him to second and after a Drew Small strikeout, Tyler Houston brought Parker home with a single to left. Chris Marras followed that with a triple that brought Houston home putting Butler up 3-2.
The Bulldogs took that lead into the bottom of the ninth inning where the Bucs were not going down without a fight. Singleton started the inning off with a leadoff double. After a fielding error moved Singleton to third, Ryan Maksim hit a line drive to right, bringing Singleton in to score, sending the game into extra innings.
After a scoreless tenth, Butler led off the eleventh inning with a single by Houston. After a walk to Marras, Nick Bartolone loaded the bases with a bunt single that advanced everyone. Connor Dall stepped in with a chance to put the Bulldogs in the lead, and he delivered with a sac fly to center, which brought home Houston putting the Bulldogs up 4-3. An infield fly and a groundout ended the Butler threat with just one run to show for it.
The bottom of the frame proved to be interesting as well. After getting the first two outs of the inning, Mason McClellan drew a walk, which was followed by an error and a single loading the bases for Charleston Southern. Nate Blanchard had a chance to tie or give the Bucs the win, but instead lined out to first base sealing the game for the Bulldogs.
Connor Mitchell (1-0) picked up the win for the Bulldogs after pitching the two extra frames. Evan Nations (0-1) took the loss.
Tyler Houston and Chris Marras each led Butler with two hits each. Marras reached base four times compiling two walks on the day as well, while Houston scored drove in one run and scored two runs of his own.
Nick Morton got the start for the Bulldogs giving up one run on five hits in five innings. Zach Barnes followed with one earned run in four innings.
The Bulldogs will be back in action this Wednesday March 2, with their first home game of the season against Marian. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
