Box Score

OMAHA – The Butler baseball team took a tough 2-1 loss at Creighton on Friday night. Each team pushed their first run of the game across home plate in the fourth inning, but the Bluejays were able to add one more in the fifth to earn the win.

Three of Creighton's six hits on the day went for extra bases. Ryan Fitzgerald, Reagan Fowler and Keith Oren all recorded doubles in the first game of the three-game series. Fitzgerald and Fowler would also be credited with RBI's while Oren went a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate.

Chris Marras and Jordan Lucio were the top performers for Butler along with the one-two punch of Bobby Napoleon and Danny Pobereyko. Marras went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Lucio was the lone RBI man on the team with a 2-for-4 night.

Napoleon jumped into the weekend rotation and held his own against the top team in the conference. The senior threw 4.2 innings before exiting the game. Danny Pobereyko would take it from there throwing the final 3.1 innings.

Napoleon allowed five hits and two walks although just one of his two runs given up were earned. Pobereyko was lights out against the Bluejays by limiting Creighton to just one hit over the final three innings. He didn't walk a single batter and struck out two.

Creighton also used a powerful one-two punch on Friday night. Rollie Lacy went eight full innings and struck out six. He set up David Gerber for the save, his eighth of the season.

The game would open up in the fourth inning with BU breaking the scoreless tie. Marras would extend the fourth with a two-out single to left field. He was able to advance to second on an error by the CU leftfielder, an error that would come up huge in the inning. With a runner in scoring position, Lucio would take advantage of the situation and deliver a single back up the middle of the diamond to score Marras and therefore give BU the 1-0 lead.

Creighton didn't waste any time in the bottom half of the inning as they quickly tied the game after three at-bats. Fitzgerald reached on a bunt single and Nicky Lopez would follow with a sacrifice to move Fitzgerald to second. Fowler's double to right center would follow allowing Fitzgerald to score and Creighton to tie the game at 1-1.

Garrett Christman would double for Butler in the fifth, but it would go down as the only hit of the inning as Lacy continued to roll on the mound. Fitzgerald's double for Creighton in the bottom half of the inning however would be crucial as Kevin Connolly came around to score the unearned run.

Connolly led off the inning and reached on a BU throwing error. Oren would join him on base after a bunt single and the Fitzgerald double down the right field line would give the home team the edge. Napoleon would be replaced in the fifth after walking Lopez. Pobereyko would come in and get a groundout for BU to avoid any further trouble.

Lacy controlled the action from there on out and a solid inning from Gerber would close the door on a comeback opportunity. Gerber did allow one hit in the ninth as Marras found room through the right side. Marras wouldn't leave first base however as Gerber recorded a strikeout during the next at-bat to get the save.
