Box Score OMAHA – The Butler baseball team scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning, but the late charge would fall short as the Creighton Bluejays held on for a 6-4 victory. With the loss, Butler falls to 1-4 in conference action while the Bluejays improve to 4-1.
The leadoff man for each team posted great numbers on Saturday as Michael Hartnagel went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and a run scored. Daniel Woodrow countered with a 3-for-4 day at the plate for Creighton with two runs scored and an RBI.
BU ended the contest with nine total hits as the middle of the lineup all recorded one. RBI's went to Chris Marras, Jordan Lucio, and Gehrig Parker who actually came up with a multi-hit performace.
Creighton was able to build a small lead early in the game by cashing in on an unearned run in the first and adding a solo score with a two-out double from Michael Emodi in the second that scored Kevin Connolly.
Butler's first run of the game would cross home plate in the fourth after a Chris Marras double to the gap would allow Drew Small to score.
The momentum would swing back to the home team in the fifth however as Creighton scored three runs off two hits. Reagan Fowler sent a two-RBI single through the right side of the infield and a sacrifice fly from Harrison Crawford would extend the lead.
Creighton would go on to add an insurance run to the scoreboard in the sixth to make the game 6-1. Butler wouldn't go away without a fight as they got things rolling in the top of the eighth inning. Hartnagel led off with a double and a pinch-hit single from Nick Bartolone would put runners on the corners with no outs.
Two batters later, Creighton would make a pitching change with Lucio coming to the plate. The newcomer took advantage of the matchup and blasted a two-RBI double to right field that scored Hartnagel and Tyler Houston. Parker followed in the lineup with an RBI groundout to second base to make the game 6-4. The comeback would stall however with the next batter popping up to first base.
Creighton used four arms on the mound with Connor Miller recording the win and Nick Highberger picking up his first save of the season.
For Butler, Nick Morton took the loss after six full innings. He was replaced on the hill by Quentin Miller who tossed 1.2 innings of work. The final pitcher to grace the mound was Josh Goldberg who came up with an out.
