Box Score Senior Riley Carter's fourth hit of the day was the game-winner as her drive to right center scored pinch-runner Katelyn Cahill for a 2-1 Butler win in nine innings Sunday in Indianapolis. The Bulldogs take two of three in the weekend series and improve to 25-20 overall and 8-6 in BIG EAST play. Creighton is now 25-17 (7-6).
In the ninth, Chelsea Norwood led off the inning with a single up the middle and Cahill came in as a pinch runner. After a failed sacrifice bunt and a strikeout, Carter came to the plate and lined a 1-2 pitch deep in the right-center gap. Cahill came all the way around to score the winning run.
Carter went 4-for-4 on the afternoon, including the two doubles. Maggie MacBeth had two hits in four trips to the plate and stole two bases.
Kristin Gutierrez got the start and pitched eight innings, allowing only a single run on three hits. She struck out eight in the no-decision. Mikeila Boroff relieved her and pitched a scoreless ninth to get the win. She improves to 9-3 on the season.
Micaela Whitney went the distance for Creighton. She struck out 15 Bulldogs, but fell to 8-7 on the season.
Creighton pushed across a run in the top of the fourth inning. Michelle Trulin walked to lead off the inning. She was moved to third after two outs and scored on a Jen Daro single that dropped in short left center.
Butler answered in the fifth. Carter doubled to right center with one out and pinch-runner Jenna Foreman scored on a Krosley Ogden single on the next pitch.
Butler's three seniors – Carter, Gutierrez and Ogden – each played a key role in the outcome Sunday, which was also Strikeout Cancer Day as each Butler player and coach dedicated the game to a loved one impacted by cancer in a pregame ceremony.
Creighton's first hit came in the top of the third as Tash Coffiel sliced a ball to the wall in left center. Center fielder Brandyce Sallee collected it on the warning track and fired a laser to third to catch the speedy Bluejay trying to stretch it into a triple.
The Bulldogs had an opportunity in the bottom of the eighth with MacBeth on third with one out. But a strikeout and fly to deep center would end the threat and set up the heroics an inning later.
Butler returns to action next weekend with a three-game series at Villanova. The BIG EAST foes are slated for a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday.
