Box Score INDIANAPOLIS – Game one of the weekend series between Xavier and Butler went to the Musketeers by the final score of 6-2. The two evenly matched teams entered the ninth inning knotted up at 1-1, but a five-run ninth from the visitors would lift XU to victory.
Butler's Nick Morton retired the first two batters that he faced in the ninth, however the inning would continue after a base on balls and a single through the right side of the infield. After the base knock, Butler would replace their starter with Danny Pobereyko with Will Larue coming up. Larue would load the bases after being walked and the Musketeers would call on David Morton to pinch hit in the eight-hole with the game on the line.
Morton became the hero of the game for the Musketeers as he found room in short right centerfield that scored two runs. The ball carried just over Connor Dall at second base, but dropped in front of both Gehrig Parker in right and Tyler Houston in center.
After walking Fallon, Butler would face another hit in the inning with Rylan Bannon picking up two RBIs on his single to center.
Butler would get a single from Houston in the ninth followed by a double to right by Jordan Lucio. Houston would come around to score in the bottom half of the inning off a sac fly from Parker, but Garrett Schilling would get a strikeout to end the game at 6-2.
The pitcher's duel was highly entertaining as Morton tossed 8.2 innings for Butler while his opponent, Zac Lowther, tossed seven full innings. Morton struck out six and walked two, but was hit with the loss (2-5). Lowther didn't get a decision, but his outing surely helped his team's cause by limiting BU to just one earned run over seven full.
The lone BU run off Lowther came on an unconventional inside the park homerun from Parker. The sophomore led off the fifth inning by driving a ball into deep right field where Nate Soria was located. Soria fixed his eyes on the ball and ended up running hard into the wall as the ball dropped in the warning track. Unable to get to his feet, Soria tried to regain his composure and eventually would throw the ball to the cutoff man. Parker however had rounded third base by the time the ball was picked up and came home to score the game-tying run.
Xavier was able to get on the scoreboard first with a sacrifice fly in foul territory in the top of the first inning. Daniel Rizzie would send a one-out triple to the wall in left center and he would quickly be sent home after the foul out from Joe Gellenbeck. Morton shut down the high-powered XU offense after the first however to keep the game close.
The two teams will come together again tomorrow afternoon at 1 PM on Fox College Sports. Bobby Napoleon is slated to get the start on the mound for BU while Xavier will go with Matt Kent.
