Xavier Tops Butler in Sunday Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

INDIANAPOLIS – Butler and Xavier played two games on Sunday afternoon after a storm came through the Indianapolis area on Saturday to wash out that contest. Each game was close on Sunday, but the Musketeers would leave town with a pair of 4-1 victories to sweep BU 3-0 in the weekend series.

Xavier scored two early in game one with a two-run third inning that broke the scoreless tie. Joe Gellenbeck sent the first run home off a sac fly to deep right field and a triple from Andre Jernigan would double the lead with Daniel Rizzie scoring on the play.

Drew Small would help BU avoid the shutout by coming around to score for the Bulldogs in the fourth. Small led off the inning with a single to short and quickly advanced into scoring position by stealing second base. The speedy Small wasn't done there as he broke for third base and would be able to come around to score off a throwing error from the XU catcher.

The momentum of Small's great baserunning wouldn't shift the momentum however as Xavier added insurance runs in the eighth and ninth to secure the win. Matt Kent picked up the win while Jeff Schank was hit with the loss. Schank went 7.1 innings and struck out three.

Game two was similar to the opener with Xavier winning 4-1. The Musketeers took a 2-0 lead this time with a pair of runs in the fourth inning after a slow start by each team. Nate Soria delivered the two-RBI double to left that scored Gellenbeck and Jernigan.

Soria would hurt BU again in the fifth with an RBI single to left centerfield. He ended the game 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Xavier pushed one more run across home plate in the fifth before Butler countered with a score in the bottom half. Chris Marras led off the inning with a solo homerun. He ended the game 2-for-4 also by adding a double, his 10th of the season.

The solo shot would be the only run of the game for BU as the Musketeers arms did their job down the stretch. Xavier used three arms total with Trent Astle getting the win (2-4) and Taylor Williams earning his first save of the season.

The loss fell to Bobby Napoleon who moves to 0-5 on the season. He was replaced by Danny Pobereyko who tossed the final 4.1 innings of work.

Butler will return to action next weekend with a three-game series at St. John's.
