CINCINNATI - After a long offseason, the Butler men's tennis team kicked off their 2016-17 campaign at the Greater Cincinnati Invitational. The tournament featured more than 10 colleges, providing a strong test to the Bulldogs in their opening weekend of competition.

In his Butler debut, transfer
Aviv Ben Shabat had a win over Xavier's top player, Jeremy Schneider. It highlighted a 1-1 singles day for the newcomer.

Spencer Lang started off his season on a great note, finishing 2-0 in #2 Singles play. Lang defeated Drew Akins of Duquesne with a tiebreaker of 10-4. Lang then took down Sidd Rajupet of Case Western Reserve in straight sets.

Lang furthered his success when
Mason Dragos joined him for #1 Doubles action. The duo took down a pair from Louisville 6-3. Dragos went 1-1 in top singles play.

Ari Gerstein saw success in his lone #3 singles match of the day, defeating Adrian Isache of NKU 6-3, 6-1. Gerstein then paired up with
Adrian Mag for #2 Doubles play. The squad took down a twosome from St. Francis, 6-2.

Mag and Lope Adelakun also played well at #4 singles, each going 1-1 during the invitational. Mag took down Stephan Goldman of Belmont in dominating fashion, 6-0, 6-0.

Sam Sullivan finished his day 1-1 in #5 singles play in his Butler debut. The freshman was victorious against Jason Holloway of Wright State in straight sets.

The brackets were unable to be completed due to weather delays throughout the weekend.

The Bulldogs will get back on the court this weekend in West Lafayette, Ind., at the Purdue Fall Invitational. Play begins Friday, September 23 and runs through Sunday, September 25.
