IOWA CITY – The Bulldogs broke into the win column at the 2016 Hawkeye Classic in a major way by sweeping the host Iowa Hawkeyes 3-0 (27-25, 25-20, 25-22). BU hit .331 as a team and dominated action at the net with nine team blocks.
Anna Logan,
Whitney Beck and
Bri Lilly were the top offensive options on Saturday afternoon for Head Coach
Sharon Clark and setter
Makayla Ferguson. Logan posted a double-double with a team-high 15 kills to go along with her team-high 13 digs. Beck was in the box score with 11 kills while Lilly posted nine. All three players hit for a high percentage, helping the 'Dawgs post their highest attack percentage of the season.
Lilly and Logan combined for seven blocks defensively while Ferguson and
Jessica Klingensmith got involved with seven of their own. Ferguson was all over the court in Iowa City by posting 39 assists, six kills, four digs and four blocks.
Action in the first set was tight from the very start as the two clubs moved down the line to tie the score at 24-24.
Anna Logan put BU on top with a kill, but Meghan Buzzerio would counter to push the set into extra points. Logan wouldn't be denied however as Ferguson found her for the final two points of the set to give BU the 1-0 lead.
Butler was in the driver's seat for nearly the entire second set after claiming a 10-5 lead early in the action. Iowa would trim the advantage to just one point at 17-16, but BU would respond with three-straight points to build a cushion. The comfortable lead would hold for the remainder of set two as Logan finished off the Hawkeyes 25-20.
After the stoppage, Butler would return to the court on a mission. They jumped out to a 12-6 lead and would never trail on their way to claiming the 3-0 win. Iowa got within three at 19-16 and again at 23-20, but the Bulldogs would prevail after a game-winner from freshman
Brooke Gregory.
The final Butler match in Iowa City will be played later tonight with the Bulldogs facing the Western Illinois Leathernecks at 5:30 PM.
