MUNCIE – The Bulldogs posted their third-straight 3-0 win on Wednesday night after sweeping the Ball State Cardinals in John E. Worthen Arena 25-18, 25-17, 25-21. BU will ride this momentum into the weekend as they prepare to host the Butler Classic at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Anna Logan once again led the BU attack with a team-high 13 kills. She notched yet another double-double by adding 10 digs. Freshman
Brooke Gregory got involved in the action by recording seven kills while
Whitney Beck finished third on the team with six.
Makayla Ferguson set up the BU hitters with a match-high 33 assists. She added seven digs, three kills, one block and one service ace to her stat line. The team leader in digs was newcomer
Taylor Takeda who notched 11 against the Cardinals. Takeda also killed BSU with her serve by recording a team-high seven aces. She finished the match just two shy of the school record. The last Bulldog to post seven service aces in a single-match was Lynn Hardin vs. Baylor in a five-set match back during the 1993 season.
The Bulldogs led from start to finish in the first set to take an early 1-0 lead. The Cardinals would rally near the midway point to get within one at 14-13, but kills from Gregory would give Butler some breathing room. Butler would score four-straight points at the end of the set to secure the win thanks to Logan who posted six of her 13 kills in the opener.
Takeda would take control of set two after back and forth action early on. The BU libero broke a 7-7 tie with a service ace and would push the lead to 9-7 with yet another ace. The scoring run would continue off a
Jessica Klingensmith kill and Takeda would force the Cardinals to call a timeout after recording her third service ace of the set. Takeda and Klingensmith didn't stop there as the duo combined for the final three points of the game to give BU the 25-17 win. Takeda had two more service aces surrounding a Klingensmith kill from Ferguson.
Takeda would once again put her imprint on the third set by helping BU rattle off three-straight points to break a 10-10 tie. The Cardinals would keep it close at 20-18, but a 4-0 BU run would follow, moving the 'Dawgs to set point. BSU would put a few more points on the board, but in the end
Anna Logan and the Bulldog attack would be too much to overcome.
The victory moves Butler's overall record to 5-4 as they prepare for a home weekend tournament that includes Tennessee State, Murray State and Wright State. BU will play two matches on Friday and one on Saturday.
