INDIANAPOLIS – Butler defeated Villanova 2-1 just 25 seconds into overtime on Thursday night to clinch the No. 2 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Women's Soccer Championship Tournament.
Paige Monaghan scored each goal for BU who ends the regular season with a 12-1-5 overall record.
Monaghan came up huge in the final moments of the match against Villanova. Her first goal of the night and eighth of the season was recorded in the 80th minute of action off a successful penalty kick try. Monaghan beat the keeper to the right side to knot the game at 1-1.
The game-winning goal would also come off the foot from Monaghan just 25 seconds into the overtime period. The play started with the Nova keeper moving the ball out to a defender on the left side of the field. The next pass would be intercepted by Monaghan and the BU points leader would dribble up the middle of the field.
Monaghan moved past one Wildcat and let a shot rip from 25 yards out. The ball beat the Nova keeper to the left side and found the back of the net to win the game and clinch the No. 2 seed for BU in the upcoming tournament field.
The result gave Butler a 5-0-4 conference record and a first round bye. They will host their semi-final match on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 7 PM. Action at the Sellick Bowl will be picked up on BEDN.
