Box Score
EVANSTON, Ill. – Butler and Northwestern ended 110 minutes of action in a 0-0 tie on Sunday afternoon to force a shootout. Each team recorded successful tries in the first two rounds, but back-to-back saves followed by a BU shot off the crossbar would allow Northwestern to advance.
Butler's second-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament came against yet another Big Ten opponent. This year's at-large bid sent the team to Northwestern while the 2015 team that won the conference tournament was matched up against Ohio State. Each contest went into double overtime.
Today's match would officially end as a tie, giving Butler a 13-2-6 overall record. The two evenly matched teams would each take 10 shots, with Butler holding the upper hand in corner kicks 6-3.
Butler once again used two goalkeepers in
Hannah Luedtke and
Leonie Doege. Luedtke didn't have to make a single save in the first 45 minutes of the game, and Doege would see a similar result for BU in the second half. Doege would make one stop in the first overtime period, while Lauren Clem of Northwestern made four stops in 120 minutes.
The 'Dawgs went with Luedtke in goal for the shootout. Action started with
Halle Stelbasky finding the back of the net. Her counterpart would match with a Northwestern goal.
Round two was more of the same with
Brenna Pawelkowski coming up successful on her try, only for the Northwestern player to match.
That trend changed in the third round as Clem would pick up a save on
Elena Gutlove's attempts. Northwestern wasn't able to capitalize however as their shot would miss wide.
Clem guessed right again in the fourth round to stop a shot from
Paige Monaghan. Pressure picked up after with Northwestern scoring a goal to go up 3-2 in the shootout.
The final BU attempt would come from freshman
Caitlyn DiSarcina. The Second Team All-BIG EAST selection would watch her shot bounce off the crossbar, signaling the end of the shootout and the end of the season.
