The Butler volleyball team clinched the third seed in the BIG EAST Tournament tonight with a 3-1 (25-21, 25-14, 22-25, 25-14) victory over Seton Hall.
Set one began as a back and forth battle with the score tied at 5-5. The Bulldogs went on a 4-1 run led by an ace from
Whitney Beck and a kill by
Natalie Ravenell to lead 9-6. Seton Hall battled back to tie the score up at 10-10. After Seton Hall tied the score again at 18-18, Butler called their first timeout of the set. A
Bri Lilly kill put the Bulldogs ahead 20-19 and the Bulldogs went on a 5-2 scoring run to take the first set 25-21.
The Bulldogs took an early 7-3 lead in set two led by a Lilly kill and a block by Ravenell. The Bulldogs extended their lead 9-3 with a block from Beck causing Seton Hall to take their first timeout. An ace by Ravenell and a block by
Brooke Gregory extended the Bulldogs lead to 13-5. The Bulldogs maintained a commanding 10-point lead at 18-8. Seton Hall would not come within ten points of the Bulldogs the rest of the set, who took set two 25-14. Lilly ended the set with eight total kills.
Set three began as a back and forth battle with Seton Hall taking the lead at 9-7. A block by Gregory brought the Bulldogs within one, the Pirates led 10-9. Seton Hall took their biggest lead of the set at 16-12, forcing Butler to call their first timeout. The Bulldogs battled to come within two of Seton Hall, causing them to take their first timeout of the set at 19-17. The Bulldogs continued to fight back with a kill by Gregory to make the score 23-22 Seton Hall. Seton Hall took the next two points and the set 25-22.
The Bulldogs took an early 4-1 lead in set four and never looked back. The Bulldogs dominated the Pirates, taking a 13-5 lead capped off with a kill by Ravenell. Strong play by
Anna Logan led the Bulldogs to an 18-10 lead over the Pirates. The Bulldogs remained in control and took the fourth set and the match 25-14.
Lilly led the attack for Butler with 15 kills and an attack percentage of .452. Ravenell posted a double-double for the Bulldogs with 12 kills and 13 digs.
Makayla Ferguson had 42 assists.
For the Pirates, Dominique Mason had 12 kills and 16 digs. Maggie Cvelbar had 17 assists.
The Bulldogs are back in action tomorrow, Nov. 15, at St. John's. The match is set to begin at 5 p.m.
