MELBOURNE, Fla. –
Kristen Spolyar hit a corner 3-pointer in front of the BU bench with just one second on the game clock to lift the Bulldogs to victory on Friday night. The Bulldogs improved to 4-2 overall after defeating Virginia Tech 79-77. Spolyar ended the night with 20 points.
Butler led Virginia Tech for a majority of the game, but a late 3-pointer from Aisha Sheppard would give the Hokies a one-point lead with just 13 seconds remaining. Butler would call a timeout and advance the ball to half court. The final play of the game would send the ball
Whitney Jennings on the wing. Jennings made the extra pass and Spolyar would knock down her third 3-point field goal of the contest to win the game.
Spolyar scored 20 points in 24 minutes of action. She shot 5-for-11 from the field and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe.
Butler's top performer against the Hokies was junior
Tori Schickel. The preseason All-BIG EAST selection scored a game-high 27 points while adding 15 rebounds.
Iman Lathan and Jennings also helped BU in the scoring column. Jennings scored 10 points and pulled down four rebounds, but her most impressive stat was dishing out a team-high seven assists in 37 minutes of action without committing a turnover. Lathan shot 50 percent from the field to net her 10 points. She added two boards, an assist and a steal in 25 minutes.
Butler recorded 18 assists on 28 made field goals. They ended the contest shooting 50 percent from the field (28-56) and 77 percent from the free throw line.
The Bulldogs will end the 2017 Paradise Jam with a game against Drexel tomorrow. Tip-off is slated for 3:30 PM.
