INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler women's basketball team recorded a 64-52 victory at home against Loyola on Monday night to improve to 7-4 on the young season. The Bulldogs have now won three-straight as they remain undefeated during the month of December.
The opening four minutes of the contest played a significant role in the outcome as Butler dominated Loyola early to open up a 9-0 lead.
Tori Schickel would score four of the first nine with
Michelle Weaver adding a triple and
Whitney Jennings delivering a mid-range jumper.
Jennings continued to score throughout the contest and would end the game with a team-high 23 points. The redshirt-junior knocked down half of her field goals (7-14) and led BU from 3-point land with four makes from distance. Jennings was also a perfect 5-for-5 from the charity stripe.
BU led Loyola 18-12 at the end of the first quarter, but a second quarter surge from the Ramblers would give Loyola a five-point lead at 23-18. The Ramblers scored the first nine points of the second frame to build their lead. Butler responded by ending the quarter on a 10-0 scoring run to hold a 32-25 advantage at the break.
The two evenly matched teams would come together one last time at 37-37, but the 'Dawgs would lead the rest of the way. A six-point cushion going into the fourth quarter would eventually drop down to just one with 5:44 to play, but Jennings would spark a 7-0 scoring run with a 3-pointer that would get BU to the finish line.
Kristen Spolyar and
Michelle Weaver would join Jennings in double figures. Spolyar scored 13 off the bench in 32 minutes of action. She just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Weaver poured in 10 points over 33 minutes and teammate
Tori Schickel filled up the box score with eight points, a team-high 11 rebounds, four assists, three blocks and two steals.
