Butler shot 63 percent in the second half to post an 85-69 win over Morehead State Tuesday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Senior
Kelan Martin posted his sixth 20-point game and fourth double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Butler improves to 9-3 on the season and 7-0 at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Butler opened the second half with a 14-3 run to push the lead to 47-31 with 14:50 to play in the contest. Less than three minutes later, the lead grew to 20 and the visitors never got within 15 the rest of the way.
"Our defense tonight is where we had segments where we were locked in and brought good energy," said Butler coach LaVall Jordan. "That's where we need to hang our hat this season. We're still looking for a full 40 minutes, but we did some good things tonight. I'm excited because we have a locker room that wants to improve."
Martin's 20 points all came within a 12-minute stretch that spanned the halftime break. He scored the first seven points for Butler in the second half as the host Bulldogs took control. In doing so, he eclipsed 1,500 career points.
Butler's 52 second-half points were a season-best as the team connected on 20-of-32 from the field, including 7-of-13 from behind the arc.
Martin led five Bulldogs in double figures.
Paul Jorgensen tied his career-high with 16 points, all of which came in the second half.
Tyler Wideman made all five of his attempts from the field, posting 15 points and six rebounds.
Kamar Baldwin had 12 points and eight rebounds.
Nate Fowler added 11 points.
Butler had a 33-28 halftime advantage despite the fact that Bulldogs other than Fowler and Wideman combined to shoot only 5-of-24 from the field in the opening 20 minutes.
Aaron Thompson had five assists against no turnovers. The Bulldogs had 21 assists on 31 made field goals as Martin and Jorgensen each had four.
Butler out-rebounded Morehead State, 42-24.
Djimon Henson led the Eagles with 22 points. Butler's defense limited Morehead State to 43-percent shooting in the contest.
The Bulldogs wrap up the non-conference slate Thursday, hosting Western Illinois at 7 p.m. Tickets are still available for the contest, which will air on FOX Sports Network affiliates including FOX Sports Indiana. Butler opens the BIG EAST schedule Dec. 27 at Georgetown.
