Box Score
A strong outing on the mound from
Garrett Christman and a four-run eighth inning propelled the Bulldogs to a 4-0 win over Dayton Tuesday afternoon in Indianapolis.
An enthusiastic crowd enjoyed the midweek, non-conference contest that included a series of promotions based on the movie
The Sandlot.
Christman got the start and went 7.1 innings, allowing only two hits and one walk. He struck out 11 Flyers. He and Dayton starter Mason Kutruff (6.0 innings, four hits, two walks, no runs) handed off the game to their respective bullpens and would not factor in the decision.
In the decisive eighth inning, two walks had runners on first and second with one out. Christman stepped to the plate, now in the role of designated hitter. His single to left field scored
Zach Jarosz and staked the home team to a 1-0 lead.
Now with the bases loaded and two outs,
Jordan Lucio was at the dish. After fouling one off his foot and needing a little extra time to shake that off, he singled to center field. The hit scored two and as the ball was misplayed by the center fielder, a third Bulldog came around to score for a 4-0 advantage.
Chris Myjak came on for the ninth inning and struck out the side to close the door on the Flyers.
???????
Ottavio Dattolo got credited with the win as he picked up the final two outs of the top of the eighth for the Bulldogs. He is now 3-0 on the season.
Dayton reliever Jordan Cox took the loss (0-3), as the first two runs of the Butler eighth were his responsibility.
???????Christman and Lucio each had two hits for Butler. All nine hits – seven for Butler and two for Dayton – were singles in a game that took just over two hours.
Butler, now 24-16 on the season, is off this weekend for a BIG EAST bye weekend that coincides with Finals Week on the Butler campus. The Bulldogs are back in action May 3 at Miami (Ohio). Butler returns to BIG EAST play May 5 with a three-game series at home against Villanova. Â Â
