Box Score
INDIANAPOLIS –
Garrett Christman threw a complete game against Creighton on Friday afternoon to help the Bulldogs defeat the Bluejays 7-1. Run support came early and often for Christman as the Bulldogs were able to record four home runs in the first four innings of action.
Home run balls were delivered by
Gehrig Parker,
Harrison Freed,
Chris Maranto and
Tyler Houston. Houston ended the game 3-for-4 with a team-high three RBI and two runs scored.
Houston used his speed to beat out a throw in the bottom of the first inning for the first Butler hit of the game. That one-out single ended up being huge as
Gehrig Parker followed him in the order to hit his fifth home run of the season over the wall in right field.
Butler's two-run lead would grow to 5-0 after two full innings as two more home runs were recorded by Butler bats.
Harrison Freed hit a monster shot over the wall in left and senior
Chris Maranto would get involved with yet another homer to leftfield. Maranto's fifth round-tripper of the year just stayed in fair territory, while Freed's second career home run was a no-doubt shot over the left fielder's head.
Rain started to fall in the top of the fourth inning and the tarp would go on the field after the third out to halt play. A 35-minute delay would follow with each team remaining in their respective dugout.
The Bluejays would make a pitching change after the stoppage. Austin Strochein would take the game ball from Jeff Albrecht and retire the first BU batter he faced with a strikeout. The scene would change quickly however as Strochein hit Maranto to give BU their first base runner of the inning. A second out would follow the hit-by pitch, but the Bulldogs would buckle down and add two more runs during Houston's at-bat with the junior centerfielder muscling a ball over the wall in left. The two-run shot made the score 7-0 in favor of the home team and moved Houston's team-high home run total to 12.
Creighton would break up the shutout in the top of the fifth with a single run generated off a lead-off triple. Parker Upton hit a ball to the wall in right field to get into scoring position. He would move along to score off an RBI groundout from Bryce Only.
The Bluejays were not able to get comfortable after the solo run in the fifth as Christman returned to the mound to dominate the rest of the way. The local right-hander struck out nine batters over nine innings, walking just three. The one earned run came off three hits.
The final game of the 2017 regular season will be played tomorrow at 12:30 PM. Senior day will take place before first pitch at approximately 12:10 PM.
