INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler baseball team recorded two wins on Saturday afternoon by defeating Villanova 4-1 and 1-0 in a conference doubleheader. Senior
Ottavio Dattolo came in for the save in game one and ended up getting the win in game two improving his overall record to 4-0.
Great pitching was on full display today with each BU starter putting on a show. In game one, freshman
Ryan Pepiot tossed eight full innings and limited the Wildcats to just one run on five hits. He struck out 11 and only issued one walk.
Game two featured
Garrett Christman taking the hill and tossing 8.1 innings of action. He shutout Villanova while striking out nine batters. Christman was a dual threat against Villanova as he also delivered one of the biggest hits of the day, helping BU win the opener with a two-RBI single in game one.
Villanova jumped out in front of game one 1-0 after Czinege scored on an RBI single from DeMarrais. Christman answered in the third with a two-out single through the right-side of the infield that scored
Michael DiViesti and
Zach Jarosz.
Butler added single runs in the fourth and seventh to secure the three-run victory.
Gehrig Parker broke for home plate with
Jordan Lucio in a rundown between first and second. His run came in the bottom of the fourth inning to move the score to 3-1. The final RBI of game one was credited to Jarosz who hit a hard ground ball to second base allowing Dall to score.
The Saturday sweep would become official in the bottom of the ninth inning in game two. Parker once again hurt the Wildcats by leading off the final frame with a single back up the middle of the diamond. Lucio followed in the order with a base knock to put two on with no outs.
The game-changing moment came with
Connor Dall at the dish. Dall squared around to bunt and the ball would roll down the third base line. The ball was fielded clean by the Wildcat third baseman and the throw would go towards the lead runner at third base. The Villanova shortstop was there to cover the bag, but the throw was off the mark which allowed Parker to slide in safely to third and then advance home on the throwing error.
The win moves Butler's overall record to 27-16 which includes a 4-7 mark against conference opponents. These two teams will get together again tomorrow at Bulldog Park for a 12 PM first pitch.
