Butler clinched a berth in next week's BIG EAST Tournament with a doubleheader sweep of Georgetown Sunday in Indianapolis. The Bulldogs took the opener, 4-0, before using a 7-6 score to win the second game.
The Bulldogs won all three games of the series to improve to 23-28 overall and 11-9 in BIG EAST play. The conference mark secures Butler the No. 4 seed in the four-team BIG EAST Tournament that begins Friday in Rosemont, Ill.
Kaitlin Doud pitched a complete game shutout in Sunday's first game, scattering three hits and three walks in the 4-0 win. She needed only 89 pitches to post the win, improving to 8-7 on the season.
All the offense Doud would need came in the first inning as
Jenna Foreman had a lead-off single and scored on a
Sarah Dixon triple. Dixon would score on a
Madi Christiansen sacrifice fly later in the inning for a 2-0 advantage. Foreman registered her 30th stolen base of the season, setting a new Butler single-season mark. The previous record was 27 by Sarah Gronowski (2015).
Doud helped herself in the fifth with an RBI double in the fifth inning.
Alyssa Lach plated the fourth run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the frame.
Butler's four runs came on six hits with senior
Brandyce Sallee and Dixon each posting two.
The second game included more theatrics as Butler came away with a hard-fought 7-6 win. Georgetown would score runs in five separate innings.
Georgetown turned a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead in the top of the third on a two-run double from Sarah Bennett. There would have been additional damage except Sallee gunned her down at home following a single to the next batter.
???????Doud gave Butler back the lead with a two-run home run on the bottom of the third. The Bulldogs had started the game 0-for-5 at the plate with runners on before Doud's blast. Butler had left seven runners on base in the first three innings.
Georgetown tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the fourth, but Dixon's diving catch at shortstop ended the inning with runners on first and third.
Lach's two-run double off the center field wall was the highlight of a three-run fourth that gave Butler some breathing room at 7-4. After two Georgetown runs,
Mikeila Boroff came on for the final 1.2 innings of work to pick up her third save of the season.
Senior
Kacey Starwalt got the start on Senior Day for the Bulldogs.
Gabbi Schnaiter picked up the win in relief.
Thanks to 10 walks, Butler's seven runs came on only four hits.
Butler's seniors were recognized between games in their final home contest.
Butler will face top-seeded St. John's Friday in the BIG EAST Tournament semifinals. DePaul and Villanova will meet in the other semifinal with the winners facing off Saturday for a BIG EAST title and an NCAA Tournament berth. All games will air live on FS2.
