INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler volleyball team will host a tournament at Hinkle Fieldhouse over opening weekend for the first times since 2001! The tournament field includes Stony Brook, Oakland, Robert Morris, Eastern Michigan along with the Bulldogs. The two-day tournament will begin at 9 AM on Friday, August 25. Head Coach Sharon Clark
Sharon Clark is entering her 18th season as the head coach of the Butler women's volleyball program. Clark reached her highest win total with the program in 2013 when she guided the team to a 24-8 overall record. During her coaching tenure, Clark has delivered 11 winning seasons, reaching the 20-win plateau six times.
2017 BIG East Preseason Poll
The Butler volleyball team finished second in the 2017 BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll. Creighton (81) earned nine of the 10 first-place votes to take the top spot. Butler landed in second with 66 points, a total that narrowly held off Marquette in third with 62 points. The preseason poll also featured Xavier (51) and Villanova (46) in the top five. The Wildcats finished just head of St. John's (43) while one single point separated DePaul (36) from Seton Hall (35). The poll rounded out with Georgetown at nine and Providence at 10.
Logan Named Preseason All-BIG EAST
Anna Logan was a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team after leading the conference in kills just one year ago. Her 2016, sophomore season featured 578 kills, the second-highest total in Butler volleyball history. Logan was an AVCA Honorable Mention All-American on top of being named All-Region and First Team All-BIG EAST. Logan averaged 4.41 kills per set, the third-highest average in school history. She proved to be a complete player by adding 355 digs, 31 service aces and 90 total blocks over the course of the season. Logan also led Butler with 17 double-doubles and joined the 20-20 club on two occasions.
All-Time Series
Stony Brook and Butler will meet for the first time in school history on Friday when the two programs take the court inside Hinkle Fieldhouse at 2 PM. Butler is 3-0 all-time vs. Robert Morris, 1-1 all-time against Eastern Michigan and 0-1 vs. Oakland.
Newcomers Add Size to the 2017 Roster
Butler added four talented freshmen to the 2017 roster. Three of the four hail from Indiana with the fourth coming from Reno, Texas. One of the best recruiting classes in recent history features three middle blockers and one outside hitter.
Rachel Klitzing and
Melody Davidson are each listed at 6-2 while
Natalie Ravenell and
Bailey Foy check in at 5-11.
Ace... Bulldogs
Butler recorded 40 more service aces than their opponents in 2016.
Anna Logan and
Makayla Ferguson tied for the team lead with 31 each.
Taylor Takeda and
Whitney Beck helped add to that total by recording 22 and 21 respectively. All four players return for the 2017 season and are expected to see major playing time.
Takeda Takes on Large Role
Taylor Takeda made a large impact on the Butler volleyball team last year as the club's starting libero. Takeda ended the year with 540 digs, the fourth-highest single-season total in BU history. Only Katie Daprile (07-10) compiled more in a Bulldog uniform. Daprile recorded 574 as a senior, 556 as a junior and 541 as a sophomore. Takeda also ranks third all-time for most service aces in a single-game when she tallied seven in a match at Ball State (9/7/16).
Solo Senior is a Setter
Butler's lone senior on the 2017 roster is setter
Makayla Ferguson. The former BIG EAST Freshman of the Year heads into her senior season with 3,318 career assists a total that ranks sixth all-time in BU volleyball history. Ferguson could climb as high as third on the list with another season of 1,000 plus assists.

The BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) will stream three Butler volleyball matches this season with the first set for Oct. 13. The Bulldogs will travel to Creighton that day for an 8 PM contest. The lone home game to stream live on BEDN will feature BU hosting Xavier on Nov. 3. That match-up features a 6 PM first serve. Butler's final BEDN game will be played at Seton Hall on Nov. 17. Live stats will be provided for all Butler Volleyball games. Fans are also encouraged to follow the team on Twitter @ButlerVB.
Up Next
Butler will return to action next weekend by participating in the 2017 Michigan Invitational. The Wolverines will host Butler on Friday, Sept. 1. Day two will feature BU playing against Green Bay and New Hampshire.
