INDIANAPOLIS – The Bulldogs are off to a 2-0 start to the 2017 season after defeating the Oakland Golden Grizzlies 3-2 on Friday night (21-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-19, 15-10). Senior setter
Makayla Ferguson led BU to victory by notching a triple double with 46 assists, 14 digs and 10 kills.
Ferguson relied heavily on
Natalie Ravenell and
Whitney Beck to fuel the BU attack. Ravenell led all players with a match-high 17 kills. She added 18 digs for her first double-double of the season. Beck was also in the box score with a double-double by supplying Butler with 15 kills and 19 digs.
The BU digs leader was once again libero
Taylor Takeda. She narrowly missed a double-double performance with 29 digs and eight assists. Takeda was also the team leader in service aces with four.
Each team ended the contest with 11 team blocks.
Rachel Klitzing did her job at the net with a team-high seven blocks. She was also credited with nine kills.
Butler hit .208 as a team compared to .127 for the visitors. Seven attack errors put Oakland in the negative during the fifth and final set. They made nine errors in their last 29 swings.
The 2017 Bulldog Brawl will continue tomorrow with five more matches to be played inside Hinkle Fieldhouse. Action will once again start up at 9 AM. The Bulldogs will play Robert Morris at 11:30 AM and end the day with a 7 PM match vs. Eastern Michigan.
