ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Butler volleyball team improved to 4-2 on the year with a 3-0 victory against Green Bay in match two of the Michigan Invitational (25-23, 25-23, 29-27).
Brooke Gregory and
Whitney Beck led BU against the Phoenix by combining for 25 of Butler's 46 kills on the day.
Gregory was in the box score with a team-high 13 kills to go along with 10 digs. Beck's double-double included 12 kills and 12 digs.
Maykayla Ferguson set up the offense with 34 assists. The defense was highlighted by libero
Taylor Takeda who recorded 15 digs and
Bri Lilly who notched eight blocks at the net.
As a team, Butler ended the competition with 13 team blocks compared to just six from Green Bay.
The Phoenix fed the ball to Lydia DeWeese throughout the game. DeWeese posted a match-high 20 kills on just 31 swings (.581).
All three sets were tight between the two clubs. Butler jumped out in front 1-0 after back-to-back kills from
Natalie Ravenell. The true freshman broke a 23-23 tie off assists from Ferguson.
Set two finished in similar fashion with Butler recording another 25-23 win.
Bri Lilly broke a 22-22 tie with a service ace and Ravenell came up big yet again for a kill, pushing the score to 24-22. DeWeese gave Green Bay a lift, but one final kill from Gregory put Butler up 2-0.
Set three was a wild finish with Green Bay fighting back from a 24-19 deficit. Gregory finally separated the two teams down the stretch 28-27 and an ace from Ferguson would seal the win.
The third and final match for Butler at the Michigan Invitational will get underway later today. BU and New Hampshire take the court at 5 PM.
