@ButlerWSoccer Blanks Marquette in BIG EAST Opener 3-0

Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS – The Bulldogs posted their eighth-straight victory on Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 shutout against Marquette. Each team came into the contest receiving votes in the national poll, but the outcome would never be in question as Butler scored once in the first half, followed by a pair of goals in the second half.

Paige Monaghan was the player of the game for Butler. The junior forward scored two goals and came up with an assist. Monaghan opened up the scoring early in the first half with her second goal of the season. Breann Pempek gained possession of the ball in Marquette territory of a Golden Eagle turnover. She played the ball from the left side back up the middle to Halle Stelbasky. Stelbasky kept the ball moving in the same direction to Elena Gutlove and Gutlove's pass would find the feet of Monaghan for the first goal. The shot beat the keeper to the upper right corner.

Butler took the 1-0 lead into half, but would push forward to increase their advantage after a goal from Gabrielle Lemkuil at the 54:01 mark. Stelbasky found Monaghan making a run up the right side and delivered a beautiful ball past all the Marquette defenders. Monaghan raced up the right side and would feed the ball back up the middle to Lemkuil who notched her second goal of the season.

The third and final goal of the match belonged to Monaghan as she once again dribbled the ball up the right side of the field. Her first shot bounced off the right post, but a deflection would send the ball right back to her. Monaghan's second attempt would find the back of the net and secure the win for BU.

The Bulldogs are now 6-0 at home and 8-1-1 overall.  They outshot Marquette 11-7, with three of those seven shots going down as saves. Hannah Luedtke got the start at goalkeeper for the Bulldogs. She grabbed one save in 45 minutes of work. The final 45 minutes belonged to freshman Leonie Doege. She ended her half with two saves.

Butler will return to action on Thursday, Sept. 28 with a road match at Seton Hall. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 PM. The contest will stream live on BEDN.
