The Bulldogs tested themselves against their toughest competition of the 2017 season so far, traveling Friday to the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational.
Butler's men faced off against an elite field in the Blue race, covering five miles at the Burke Golf Course in South Bend, Ind. The Bulldogs placed 15
th in the team standings.
Johnny Leverenz paced the Bulldogs with a time of 24:41.4 to finish in the 58
th spot. He was seven seconds ahead of teammate
Barry Keane as the freshman posted a time of 24:48.1 to finish 67
th.
Euan Makepeace (25:01.5) and
Evan Johnson (25:02.8) finished in the 87
th and 88
th spots, respectively.
Matt Lumbar was the fifth scorer for the Bulldogs, taking 99
th with a time of 25:09.3.
In his Butler debut,
Clark Otte ran the five miles in 25:40.1 (126
th), while
Bobby Johnson (26:03.0; 147
th) and
Eric Baugh (26:04.1; 149
th) completed the Butler group that ran in the 172-runner field.
Gilbert Kigen won the race with a time of 23:23.7. He was the first of three Alabama runners to cross the finish line as the Crimson Tide took the top three spots. Southern Utah, Colorado and Air Force took the top three positions in the team competition. The field included 21 teams, including several that entered the event nationally-ranked.
Sophomore
Josephine Thestrup led the Butler women in the gold race, finishing eighth. She covered the 5k course in 17:31.8.
Freshman
Angelina Ellis was the second Bulldog to cross the line, placing 32
nd in a time of 18:06.4. She was followed by teammates
Camille Hines (18:44.3; 82
nd),
Hannah Hartzell (99
th; 18:54.2) and
Grace Butkus (19:04.2; 114
th) in the scoring five.
This was the season debut for Hartzell.
Butler placed 15th in the 25-team field.
Allison Miller (19:28.5),
Kristen Johnson (19:31.1) and
Julia Adams (21:01.2) placed 143
rd, 145
th and 192
nd, respectively. The race included 203 runners.
Creighton's Emily Martin won the race in a time of 16:58.1. Northern Iowa won the team event, followed by Temple and Saint Louis.
Butler had three men compete in the open race. Senior
Michael Carey and freshman
Jackson Martin placed 13
th and 14
th, respectively. Carey crossed the line in 26:13.8, seven seconds ahead of Martin. Freshman
Blake Roberts was 26
th (27:34.8).
The Bulldogs return to action Oct. 14, traveling to Louisville, Ky., for the NCAA Pre-Nationals meet.
