A career-high 37 points by Kelan Martin fueled Butler in a 94-83 win over Marquette Friday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Butler shot 59 percent from the field in moving to 13-6 on the season and 3-3 in BIG EAST play.
 
Butler ended a three-game losing streak with Friday night's result. Marquette is now 12-6 (3-3 BIG EAST).
 
"We had a good talk leading into this game about who we want to be and what we want our identity to be," said Butler coach LaVall Jordan. "We had guys step up and make big shots in big moments, and we got stops at the right times. We were really connected tonight, especially with 19 assists and only three turnovers."
 
Twenty-four of Martin's points came in the second half. His 37 points were the most by a Butler player since Matthew Graves scored 42 against Cleveland State on Jan. 15, 1998. Martin made 12 of his 17 attempts from the field and made all nine of his free throws. He added a game-high seven rebounds.
 
Butler saw its lead grow to as many as 14 with just under two minutes remaining in the first half. Martin went to the bench with two fouls seconds later and Marquette scored the final eight points of the half to cut Butler's halftime lead to 44-38.
 
That lead evaporated midway through the second half as Marquette scored nine unanswered to take a 67-60 advantage with 10:06 to play. Butler called a timeout and scored the next 13 points to take a 73-67 lead they would not relinquish. Martin had eight points in that spurt. Butler's lead would grow to 11 with four minutes to play before the teams largely traded baskets down the stretch for the final margin.
 
Butler had a 60-28 advantage in points in the paint, powered by 16 points from Tyler Wideman. He made seven of his 10 shots. Kamar Baldwin was also highly productive, making 9-of-14 for 19 points.
 
Marquette's backcourt duo of Markus Howard and Andrew Rowsey entered Friday's game averaging a combined 49.2 points per game in BIG EAST play. Butler limited them to 31. Howard was scoreless in the first half and was 0-of-4 from behind the arc. Marquette's production fell to Sam Hauser, who had 30 points, including six three-pointers.
 
Paul Jorgensen had 10 points and six assists. The six assists were a season-high and one off his career-high set during his two seasons at George Washington. Butler had 19 assists against a season-low three turnovers.
 
For Martin, this was his seventh 20-point performance in the team's last eight games. He has 12 20-point games on the season. His 37 points eclipse his previous mark of 35 against Georgetown on Feb. 2, 2016.
