MILWAUKEE – A wild finish in Milwaukee featured Marquette squeaking out a two-point win over Butler 69-67. Allazia Blockton beat the buzzer for the Golden Eagles to hit the game-winning bucket.
Blockton scored a game-high 25 points to lead Marquette to victory. The Golden Eagles remain undefeated in BIG EAST action (6-0). With the loss, BU moves to 11-7 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
Butler outscored Marquette 17-13 in the third, and 18-14 in the fourth to mount the comeback.
Kristen Spolyar was on fire, netting 11 of her season-high 22 points in the fourth frame. Spolyar hit three 3-pointers in the fourth while adding a pair of free throws.
Butler faced a five-point deficit at the end of the first quarter in part to the Golden Eagles ending the opening frame on a 7-0 scoring run. That lead would grow to 15 points near the midway mark of the second, but Butler would trim that advantage down to just 10 at the half.
A total team effort got Butler within six points at the third quarter media timeout. Five different player accounted for the first five field goals of the second half for Butler.
Iman Lathan,
Whitney Jennings,
Kristen Spolyar,
Tori Schickel and
Shae Brey all came up with a field goal to make the score 48-42. The six-point spread would hold for the rest of the quarter.
Momentum stayed with BU in the fourth as the Bulldogs opened the quarter on a 9-1 scoring run. Spolyar's first 3-pointer of the game (7:02) gave BU their first lead since the 4:57 mark of the first quarter.
Isabelle Spingola would answer for Marquette to regain the Golden Eagle lead, but Spolyar would answer the call for Butler by scoring the team's next six points. Spolyar hit another triple off a feed from Jennings and would get to the rim for a layup off an assist from Lathan. Spolyar would connect on her and-1 opportunity by knocking down a free throw and BU would enjoy a 64-59 lead with 5:54 to play.
Butler's lead would dwindle down to just one point with 3:52 on the game clock, but Spolyar would once again lift her teammates with a three-pointer, this time with less than two minutes to play. The triple gave BU a 67-63 lead.
A huge shot from Danielle King would keep Marquette alive and the Golden Eagles would move forward to knot the game at 67-67 after a jumper from Blockton.
The bizarre ending would follow as Danielle King missed a 3-pointer after a Marquette timeout with just three seconds to play.
Tori Schickel collected the rebound, but didn't realize there was a 0.8 second difference between the shot clock and game clock. Fans were getting ready for an overtime period, but the officials called traveling and would go to the monitor to check the clock. After review 0.8 seconds was placed back on the game clock and the Golden Eagles would take the ball out of bounds under their own basket. Blockton dove down to the block, took the pass and got the shot up and in before time expired.
Schickel posted yet another double-double for Butler with 12 points and a team-high 13 rebounds. She added six assists, one block and one steal to her stat line in 39 minutes of action.
Michelle Weaver ended the game with 11 points,
Whitney Jennings and
Iman Lathan each added eight, and
Shae Brey rounded out the scoring total with six.
Butler will return to action on Sunday with a 4:30 tip at DePaul. The game will air live on CBSSN.
