INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler women's basketball team recorded a 59-53 win against Creighton on Friday night to improve their overall record to 12-8. The Bulldogs never trailed in the contest to collect their fourth conference win of the season.
Whitney Jennings led the team with 17 points in 39 minutes of action. The standout junior added six rebounds, three assists and a steal to her stat line against the Bluejays. Helping Jennings with the scoring load was
Tori Schickel with 13 points and
Michelle Weaver who added 10.
The Bulldogs came out hot in the first quarter by starting the game on a 10-3 scoring run. BU hit four of their first five shots in the span of three minutes to force Creighton to call timeout. An 11-0 scoring run in the first frame would help Butler win the quarter 22-9. Jennings had 10 of her 17 points in the opening 10 minutes. The Bulldogs as a team shot 56 percent from the field (9-16).
The start of the second quarter was much like the first with Butler dominating the first four minutes. BU opened the second on a 12-4 scoring run, but Creighton would fight back to win the quarter 18-16. The Bluejays went into the half on a 10-2 scoring run.
Creighton would win the third quarter by two points (12-10) and the fourth by three (14-11), but would never get within a single possession of BU in the second half. Audrey Faber kept the Bluejays in the game by scoring 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Olivia Elger joined her in double figures with 12 points.
Butler shot 38 percent for the game and won the rebound battle 42-35.
Shae Brey was a force on the boards for the Bulldogs. She pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds in the victory.
Butler will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 21 with a 1PM tip against Providence. Action will stream live on BEDN.
