INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler women's basketball team posted a 68-57 victory on Sunday afternoon against Providence.
Tori Schickel led BU to victory with 27 points and nine rebounds.
Schickel was the driving force for BU on the offensive end. She connected on 11-of-her 17 field goals and was near perfect from the free throw line (5-6).
Whitney Jennings added 16 and
Michelle Weaver was in the box score with 10.
All 10 of Weaver's points came in the second half. She was equally as impressive on the other end of the court by shutting down Jovana Nogic. Nogic recorded 13 points in the first half, but was shadowed by Weaver over the final 20 minutes of action. She didn't score another point as BU erased a three-point halftime deficit to win the game by 11.
The turning point in the game came at the start of the second half. Providence built a three-point lead by finishing the first half on a 9-0 scoring run. BU would answer that scoring run by scoring the first nine points of the third quarter. Providence went to the sideline at the 3:48 mark for a media timeout without scoring a single point. BU would win the third frame 16-6 to take a commanding lead into the fourth.
The zone defense in the second half allowed BU to outscore Providence 36-22. Providence did cut the BU lead down to just three points in the fourth at 50-47, but Schickel would answer a Friar 3-point field goal with an old fashioned three-point play.
Kristen Spolyar would follow with a fast break lay-up to give the 'Dawgs a cushion.
Spolyar ended the game with seven points, four assists and four steals.
Shae Brey was an impact player with six points, eight rebounds and three assists.
Iman Lathan rounded out the BU scoring total with a field goal.
Butler will take their two-game winning streak into next week with yet another pair of home games on the schedule. Butler will host Georgetown on Friday night and wrap up the weekend with an afternoon top against Villanova on Sunday. BU defeated both Georgetown and Villanova earlier this season.
