Georgetown, ranked No. 4 in this week's national polls, used two second-half goals to register a 2-0 win over Butler Sunday afternoon at Shaw Field in the nation's capital. The match-up included the top two teams in the BIG EAST standings heading into Sunday's play.
The Hoyas remain undefeated at 15-0-2 (8-0 in BIG EAST play), while Butler falls to 11-5-1 (5-2-1 BIG EAST).
With today's win, Georgetown clinched the BIG EAST regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament. With St. John's defeating Xavier, 1-0, as well on Sunday, the Bulldogs and St. John's are now tied at 5-2-1 (16 points) in BIG EAST play and share second place in the standings heading into the final match of the regular season.
"That was the kind of performance we needed to pull off a result against the No. 4 team in the country," said Butler co-head coach
Rob Alman. "Georgetown is an excellent team and very deserving regular season champions, but I felt we were the better team for large portions of the game today. It was disappointing to give up the first goal on a set piece after creating numerous good chances in the first half, plus hitting the bar and having a goal ruled out for offside. Again, they are a fantastic opponent and we are disappointed with the outcome but very pleased with our level of performance. I think anyone watching the game live would understand that the result certainly could have gone in our favor based on the flow of the game. But, ultimately Georgetown took a couple of their chances and we did not - simple as that!
"We now need to rest, recover and reset to take on a good Villanova team on Thursday."
Georgetown's Kelly Ann Livingstone put the first tally on the scoreboard with a goal in the 65
th minute. Her shot from inside the six-yard box found the net. Meaghan Nally assisted on the score.
In the 83
rd minute, the Hoyas picked up an insurance goal as Paula Germino-Watnick scored her fourth goal of the season. Amanda Carolan was credited with the assist.
Both of Georgetown's goals came on crosses into the six-yard box that created some chaos and forced Butler keeper
Leonie Doege off her line.
With the wind at their backs for the first 45 minutes, the Bulldogs applied the pressure in the first half with a 6-3 advantage in shots and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Georgetown countered in the second half, using the wind to take seven of the nine shots attempted in the half.
Freshman
Anja Savich led the Bulldogs with three shots.
Butler is guaranteed to host its first game of the six-team BIG EAST Tournament. Still to be determined is if that hosted match will be in the quarterfinals or (with a bye) in the semifinals.
The regular season finale for the Bulldogs is set for Thursday as the team travels to Villanova for a 3 p.m. kick. If Butler is able to secure a better result vs. Villanova than St. John's is able to obtain against DePaul on Thursday, then Butler will earn the No. 2 seed and receive a bye into the semifinals. St. John's owns the tiebreaker over Butler from a head-to-head win earlier this season. Xavier is also in contention for the No. 3 seed, but Butler can do no worse than the No. 4 seed and hosting a BIG EAST quarterfinal regardless of results Thursday.
The BIG EAST Digital Network will stream Butler's Thursday match.
