The Bulldogs fell 1-0 to the No. 4 Georgetown Hoyas Sunday afternoon in the 2018 BIG EAST Championship match. This is Georgetown's third straight BIG EAST title, the first time a team has won three straight since 2002. The Hoyas scored in the 3
rd minute and held the Butler offense scoreless to take the title.
Georgetown jumped out early with a goal from BIG EAST Offensive Player Caitlin Farrell. Forward Kyra Carusa sent the ball through the Bulldog defense to Farrell, who finished the ball past starting keeper
Hannah Luedtke. The 1-0 lead for the Hoyas would carry into halftime.
The Hoyas controlled much of the possession in the first half, taking seven shots and holding the Bulldogs to zero chances on goal. The Hoyas also held the edge in corner kicks, 2-1.
Butler came out aggressive in the second half, finding many opportunities on goal. The best chance for the Bulldogs came in the 49
th minute as Monaghan received a ball from
Anja Savich, beat her defender, and put a shot wide of the goal.
Amanda Kowalski saw another look on goal for the Bulldogs, sending a shot into the arms of Arielle Schechtman in the 55
th minute.
The Bulldogs continued to press as
Macy Miller sent a shot just wide of the post in the 74
th minute looking for the equalizer. Butler battled for the difference maker but could not find it as the game drew to an end.
Leonie Doege, who took over the keeper position for the Bulldogs in the second half as she regularly does, made four key saves in the second half to keep the Bulldogs in the game. Butler notched three shots in the second half as Georgetown tacked on five more.
Butler is 13-6-1 overall. Georgetown is one of two remaining unbeaten teams nationally (17-0-3).
The Bulldogs will now look to the NCAA Tournament Selection Show Monday (Nov. 5) afternoon at 4:30 p.m. The championship provides for a field of 64 teams. Thirty-one conference champions qualify automatically; the balance of the field is selected at-large by the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Committee.
