BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Butler took their first loss of the season on Wednesday night with a 66-46 setback at Indiana.
Tori Schickel highlighted the game for the Bulldogs with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Schickel notched her fifth double-double of the season against the Hoosiers. Joining Schickel with 13 points was point guard
Whitney Jennings. BU also got nine points from
Kristen Spolyar who missed most of the third quarter after being poked in the eye.
IU had three players reach double figures with Brenna Wise leading the way with 22. The redshirt-junior grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds to post a double-double. Ali Patberg was in the box score with 16 points and Bendu Yeaney added 13.
The Hoosiers jumped out to an early 12-5 lead in the first quarter behind eight points from Yeaney.
Ashanti Thomas jumped into the starting lineup for the first time in her BU career and responded with the first two Butler points of the night. Spolyar would add a three to get Butler to five total at the first break.
The message in the BU huddle after the first stoppage was clear. The ball started to move inside and
Tori Schickel would respond by scoring eight-straight points from the paint.
Schickel got the offense rolling and Butler would get back into the game after a four-point play from Jennings in the second quarter. The senior knocked down a 3-pointer from the top of the key and was fouled on the attempt. After the made free throw, Butler would get within six points at 25-19.
IU would counter by ending the first half on a 10-4 scoring run to take a 35-23 advantage into the half.
Neither team could get their offense going in the opening moments of the second half. Butler would switch to a 2-3 zone challenging the Hoosier to hit from the outside. The strategy worked at first, but IU would score their final 11 points of the third from the free throw line to keep their lead.
Any chance of a comeback was shot down early in the fourth with the Hoosiers hitting back-to-back 3-pointers. The lead grew to 56-35 after a BU timeout and would not get any closer until the final buzzer.
Butler will return to action this Saturday with a road game at Akron.
