Box Score

St. John's took a 75-68 double-overtime victory over Butler Wednesday night in Queens, N.Y.

With the result, Butler is now 19-11 on the season and 9-8 in BIG EAST play.

Justin Simon (24), Bashir Ahmed (22) and Marvin Clark II (20) combined for 66 of the Red Storm's 75 points.

A Kelan Martin runner in the lane gave Butler a 58-53 lead with 17.1 seconds to play in regulation. Clark quickly countered with a three-pointer. Following a Butler turnover, Simon was able to get to the rim and tie the game. A Butler miss at the horn pushed the game to overtime.

In the first overtime, St. John's took a six-point lead with 2:21 to play, but Kamar Baldwin tied things up with a three-pointer and three free throws as he was fouled on an attempt with 48 seconds to play. A St. John's turnover and a miss by each team sent the game to double-overtime.

In the second and deciding overtime, St. John's scored the final nine points to win, 75-68. Butler didn't score again after leading 68-66 with 2:49 to play.

St. John's extended a three-point halftime lead to 12 at 37-25 by scoring the first nine points of the second half. Butler would come all the way back, holding St. John's scoreless for a 6:23 stretch and taking a 50-46 lead. Paul Jorgensen keyed that run with 12 points during that stint.

Butler shot only 35 percent in the game. The Red Storm countered with a 47-percent mark. St. John's overcame 24 turnovers and the absence of star sophomore Shamorie Ponds, who missed the game with an abdominal injury.

Martin and Jorgensen led the Bulldogs with 17 points apiece. Baldwin added 11 and Nate Fowler had 10 points. Butler's bench outscored SJU, 32-0.

The Bulldogs close out the regular season Saturday at Seton Hall. The 8 p.m. start will air on CBS Sports Network.
