SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall Pirates came back to record a 75-64 win at Walsh Gym on Sunday afternoon by outscoring Butler 30-16 in the fourth quarter. The Pirates went on a 15-0 run during a five-minute span to record the victory.
Butler moves to 13-12 on the season with the setback. That record includes a 5-8 mark in the BIG EAST Conference.
Tori Schickel led BU in a losing effort with 24 points and 14 rebounds.
Whitney Jennings scored all 17 of her points in the first half on Sunday afternoon and
Michelle Weaver chipped in with 13 by knocking down four 3-point field goals.
Butler started the game on a 5-0 scoring run and would lead 10-3 at the first media timeout. The Pirates hit just one of their first nine attempts of the game. JaQuan Jackson and Kimi Evans would score five each to give SHU 10 total points, but the Bulldogs would pour in 18 to get out in front after one.
BU would own a 37-32 lead at the half thanks to
Whitney Jennings scoring 17 points in the opening 20 minutes. Jackson continued to score at a high level for Seton Hall to post 16 first half points. The Pirates also got a lift from Shadeen Samuels who scored eight in the second quarter.
Samuels scored the first seven points of the quarter for Seton Hall, but Jennings would respond with six-straight for the Bulldogs. Jennings was efficient early by making six of her first 12 field goal attempts.
The third quarter started well with Kaela Hilaire and
Tori Schickel exchanging field goals for their respective clubs. Seton Hall would move ahead to win the quarter 13-11. BU went scoreless over the final 4:51 of the third and that trend would carry over into the fourth quarter.
Seton Hall would pick up their defensive intensity and force 19 BU turnovers. The 'Dawgs only had four turnovers at the half, but ball pressure and an occasional full court press would throw BU out of rhythm.
Nicole Jimenez checked back into the game in the fourth quarter to knock down a huge 3-point field goal at the 6:34 mark to give Seton Hall their first lead of the game at 53-52. An 11-0 scoring run would force BU to call timeout and that run would extend after the stoppage to 15-0.
Butler tried to extend the game by fouling, but Seton Hall would score their final 18 points from the free throw line. They ended the game 25-for-31 while BU shot 14-of-23 from the stripe.
Butler's final two home games of the regular season will be played February 9 and 11. The Bulldogs will host DePaul first in their annual Pink Game. Sunday's tip against Marquette will be Senior Day.
