INDIANAPOLIS – Butler never trailed DePaul in the first half on Friday night, but a 29-point third quarter from the Blue Demons would lead DePaul to an 86-68 victory. Butler moves to 13-13 on the year with a 5-9 mark against conference opponents.
The Bulldogs shot the ball extremely well in the opening 10 minutes of the contest to open up a 25-16 lead.
Whitney Jennings hit two quick 3-point field goals that gave BU an 8-2 lead and forced DePaul into a timeout. Jennings ended the first quarter with 14 points by going 4-for-5 from 3-point range. As a team, Butler shot 56 percent from the floor and 83 percent (5-6) from behind the arc.
The hot start quickly cooled down however as Butler was limited to just nine points in the second quarter. Center
Tori Schickel picked up her third personal foul with 5:24 to play in the second. BU would be outscored 10-2 with Schickel sidelined and the two clubs would head into halftime tied up at 34-34.
The game took a bad turn for Butler in the third with DePaul opening the second half on an 11-0 scoring run. DePaul took full control of the game by winning the quarter 29-14. The 15-point lead would hold for the remainder of the game as DePaul also won the fourth quarter 23-20.
The balanced Blue Demon scoring attack helped Head Coach Doug Bruno record his 700th career victory. All five starters scored in double figures with Chante Stonewall leading the way with 16 points. Kelly Campbell nearly posted a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds.
Butler was led by Jennings who dropped 23 points on 8-of-21 shooting. Five of her eight makes came from 3-point range. The only other Bulldog to finish the game in double figures was
Kristen Spolyar who posted 16 points to go along with four assists.
Tori Schickel and
Sydney Buck each scored seven points for BU.
Kaela Hodges ended up with six while
Iman Lathan and
Shae Brey each added four. The BU scoring total was rounded out by
Sarah Humphrey who went 1-for-2 from the free throw line.
Butler will return to action on Sunday for their last home game of the regular season. Senior Day for
Sydney Buck,
Kaela Hodges and
Iman Lathan will feature a 1 PM tip vs. Marquette.
