The Butler Lacrosse team notched their first win of the season Thursday afternoon at Howard. Seven Bulldogs scored in the 16-7 effort to take down the Bison. Butler is now 1-7 on the season, Howard moves to 1-3.
The Bulldogs' two leading scorers
Haley Hallenbeck and
Ashley Guerra led the offense for Butler, each with four goals. Sophomore
Christina Soderquist put three in the back of the net while
Morgan Paige,
Rachel Kegler,
Ashley Steffes, and
Reilly Simmons each scored one goal.
The first half was a back and forth battle between the Bulldogs and the Bison until the Bulldogs went on a 4-0 run to end the half. Soderquist began the scoring for Butler, finding the back of the net just 30 seconds into the game. Hallenbeck scored three of her four goals in the first half. Butler had a 9-4 lead at the midway point.
Butler began the second half strong with goals from Guerra, Soderquist, and Steffes in the opening ten minutes. The Bulldogs remained in the driver's seat, only allowing three Bison goals and scoring seven of their own.
Sophomores
Rachel Kegler and
Reilly Simmons scored their first goals of the season off assists from
Ashley Lizzi and
Kasey Diodati, respectively. Guerra (14) and Hallenbeck (12) now lead the team in goals this season.
Haley Rayburn won her first game in goal for the Bulldogs, making 11 saves and only allowing six goals.
Natia Warren led the scoring for the Bison with five goals. Goalkeeper Amerra Sheckles received the loss, making 18 saves and allowing 16 goals.
The Bulldogs return to Indianapolis to begin BIG EAST play, taking on Connecticut Sunday, March 18. The match is slated to begin at Noon.
