Butler continued its Spring Break trip in Florida with a pair of games at the University of South Florida Series, being played in Clearwater, Fla. Maine and Army both came away with victories in their respective match-ups with the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs are now 8-14 on the year with three games remaining in Florida.
Army was able to squeak out a 6-5 win over the Bulldogs in an afternoon contest. Using a single run in the fifth inning and two in the sixth inning, Army took a 4-3 lead. The teams traded two runs each in the seventh inning for the final margin.
Alyssa Garcia and
Jenna Foreman each had two of Butler's eight hits. Each also stole a base.
Trailing 6-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Bulldogs mounted a rally in hopes of stealing a win. Freshman
Claire Gilliland tripled to lead off the inning. A Foreman single scored her with one out. Foreman then scored on an RBI groundout to pull Butler within one at 6-5. With two outs, Butler would put two runners on thanks to a
Sarah Dixon single and an
Alyssa Lach walk, but Army was able to close the door.
Alyssa Graves relieved starter
Gabbi Schnaiter, but allowed two runs to take the loss. Schnaiter allowed only three earned runs in six innings of work.
A five-run fifth inning proved to be the difference in the morning contest as Maine took a 5-1 win. Four of the five runs scored in the deciding frame were unearned.
Butler had six hits in the contest, including two by
Christina Candotti. Lach scored Butler's run in the bottom of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Graves went four inning for the Bulldogs, allowing six hits. She struck out six.
Kaitlin Doud relieved Graves, giving up four hits and striking out one.Â
