The Bulldogs split a pair of Saturday contests at the Bruins Classic in Nashville, Tenn. Butler lost, 4-3, to Northern Iowa early in the day before rallying for a 7-3 decision over North Carolina A&T.
With the results, Butler is now 4-8 on the young season. The team has a pair of Sunday games left on the docket in the event hosted by Belmont.
In Saturday's opener against Northern Iowa, a late comeback from the Bulldogs came up just short. The Panthers used a three-run triple from Jaclyn Spencer to get on the board in the top of the first before the teams traded zeros until the fifth inning.
Jenna Foreman's single to left center scored freshman
Claire Gilliland and pulled Butler within, 3-1. UNI countered with what proved to be a valuable insurance run in the top of the sixth inning.
In the bottom half of the frame,
Sammy Andersen led off with a double and scored on a
Kaitlin Doud triple.
Christina Candotti singled in pinch-runner
Emma Morton to pull within 4-3. The Panthers were able to get out of a two-on, one-out situation to secure the win.
Gabbi Schnaiter got the start and allowed the four runs in 5.1 innings of work. UNI had eight hits and drew five walks. Doud came on in relief and held the Panthers scoreless over the final 1.2 innings.
Payton Longest had two hits for Butler.
In the 7-3 win over North Carolina A&T later in the day, Butler scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-1 lead and never looked back.
Candotti two-run single and Doud's RBI double gave the Bulldogs their first three runs. Butler's run in the second came on a bases-loaded hit by pitch, while Gilliland tripled home a run in the third. It was the first extra-base hit of the freshman's career.
Anderson's pinch-hit, two-run single in the fourth gave Butler its final 7-3 advantage.
Doud pitched the first 4.1 innings, allowing three runs (two earned). Senior
Ambry Turpen came on in relief and pitched a scoreless 2.2 innings. She allowed only one hit while striking out two. Doud picked up her first win of the season and is now 1-3.
Foreman had three stolen bases for Butler. The Bulldogs had seven hits in the contest compared to eight for North Carolina A&T.
The Bulldogs conclude play in Nashville Sunday with a pair of games. Butler meets Northern Iowa for a second time at 11:15 a.m. (Central).
