INDIANAPOLIS –
Zach Jarosz delivered a walk-off single for Butler in the bottom of the 11th inning to help the Bulldogs come from behind and defeat the Miami Redhawks 4-3. Butler's second extra inning win in the span of two days moves their overall record to 26-11.
Butler had to fight back in this one as Miami Ohio took an early 2-0 lead after one. Ross Haffey smashed a ball off the wall in centerfield for a one out double and a triple from Hayden Senger would put the Redhawks on top 1-0. The second run of the inning would come home on a sac fly from Landon Stephens.
Butler chipped away at the deficit in the sixth with a sacrifice fly from
Garrett Christman. The senior third baseman leads the club with 36 RBI this season.
Miami would answer in the eighth with another run to move the score to 3-1. Stephens hit a one-out homer over the wall in left for an insurance run.
The Bulldogs didn't blink as they came up with two runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game.
Connor Dall doubled down the left field line to score Christman and Parker. The 'Dawgs had two on with just one out after the extra base hit, but a pop-up bunt turned into a double play and sent the two teams into the ninth knotted up at 3-3.
The 11th inning was the difference with Dall reaching base as the lead-off man after being hit by a pitch. He took second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a deep fly out from
Zach Parker. Jarosz would play the hero on Wednesday with a shot past the Miami shortstop who was playing in. Jarosz ended the game 2-for-5 from the plate.
Gehrig Parker and
James Gargano also recorded multi-hit games vs. Miami.
The win went to
Austin Waeghe (1-0) while the loss went to Jacob Banks (0-1). Waeghe tossed the final two innings of the contest for BU. He was one of five 'Dawgs to touch the rubber.
Connor Schultz got the start and threw four full innings before being replaced by
Sam Hubbe. Schultz struck out five, allowing six hits which generated two earned runs. Hubbe was on for one and
Josh Walker would get the nod for the next three.
Jack Pilcher also saw an inning of action.
Butler will step away from BIG EAST action this weekend to play a two-game series against Illinois State. The first game will be played Saturday at Bulldog Park. Sunday's tilt will be played at Illinois State. Each contest will start at 2 PM EST.
