The Butler softball team finishes their regular season this weekend at St. John's. The Bulldogs (20-25, 7-8 BIG EAST) are still in the hunt to qualify for the four-team BIG EAST Tournament, but will need to sweep the three-game series in Queens, N.Y.
The top four (of the eight) teams will qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament in Rosemont, Ill., May 11-12. Butler has been the No. 4 seed in the last two BIG EAST Tournaments, including capturing the 2016 title and advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
DePaul currently leads the conference with a 12-3 record, followed by Creighton (9-3), Villanova (10-5), and St. John's (9-6). The Bulldogs (7-8) have clinched a berth to the BIG EAST Tournament in the last weekend of play the past two seasons.
Shortstop
Claire Gilliland has been hot for the Bulldogs. The freshman batted .375 last week as the Bulldogs had a four-game week. In Wednesday's non-conference win over IUPUI, Gilliland drove in two runs in the 7-3 result. She added a solo home run in Sunday's loss at DePaul. The blast was the fourth of her freshman season.
Jenna Foreman continues to pace the Bulldogs offensively, leading the team in batting average (.376) and hits (59). Her 59 hits are good for third in the BIG EAST and she has scored a team-high 27 times. The junior has swiped 33 bases on 36 attempts, which has already broken the Butler record she set in 2017 with 30 stolen bases.
The power in the Bulldogs' lineup is provided by junior
Kaitlin Doud. She leads the Bulldogs in home runs (six), doubles (seven), triples (five), and RBI (29). Her six triples also lead the BIG EAST and her 18 extra-base hits have given her a team-best .493 slugging percentage.
Seniors
Alyssa Lach and
Sarah Dixon are two other Bulldogs with strong offensive numbers. Lach has knocked five doubles and two home runs, and her 20 RBI are second on the team. Dixon has reached base in thirteen straight games. The outfielder also has two home runs this season, with six doubles and one triple.
In the circle, Doud has posted 10 wins with a 3.69 ERA, which drops to 3.21 in BIG EAST play. Freshman
Alyssa Graves has registered 9 wins and has a team-low 2.60 ERA, which is good for fourth in the BIG EAST. In 118.2 innings of work, she has struck out 114 batters.
Gabbi Schnaiter has made three saves in her 58.2 innings of work with 26 strikeouts.
