Visiting Drake scored two goals in the final 10 minutes of play to pull off a 2-1 upset of No. 9 Butler Monday night at the Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis.
The result drops the Bulldogs, who posted a tie at No. 4 Akron Friday, to 0-1-1 on the young season. Drake improves to 1-1.
Despite aggressive play from Drake all evening, the host Bulldogs still managed a 1-0 lead with 10 minutes left in regulation. Drake's Alex Peterson fired a blast from the top of the box that was redirected by teammate Paul Ciszewski to knot the game at 1-1.
Less than seven minutes later, Lucas Bartlett scored off a Cole Poppen corner kick to give Drake a 2-1 advantage that would hold up over the final 2:31.
"As disappointing as it is, we need to learn from this result," said Butler coach
Paul Snape. "We lost too many battles tonight and we weren't good enough throughout, even in the first half when we managed to take a 1-0 lead. The better team won tonight."
Butler's goal came in the 32
nd minute off the foot of freshman
Eric Hollenkamp. The newcomer subbed into the match just a few minutes prior and his first collegiate touch was a rocket from 20 yards out that gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Junior
Brandon Guhl, who earlier in the day was selected as the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, assisted on the score.
Hollenkamp was one of six true freshmen on the field at the time of his goal. Five newcomers got the start for the Bulldogs and seven saw action in the contest.
Freshman
Gabriel Gjergji turned away Drake's best attempt to tie the match, which came in the 75
th minute. His diving save to the right post off Peterson's header kept Butler in the lead. That would be short-lived as Drake scored six minutes later.
Gjergji made six saves.
Butler held slim advantages in both shots (14-13) and corner kicks (6-5). Eleven different Bulldogs contributed to those 14 shots. Showcasing the aggressiveness they brought all evening, Drake committed 20 fouls to just 10 for Butler. The match featured three yellow cards.
Drake keeper Jared Brown made five saves in the win.
Butler has a quick turnaround and a formidable opponent on the horizon as the Bulldogs travel to Kalamazoo, Mich., on Thursday night for a match-up with Western Michigan. It's another Top 15 opponent for Butler, which opens the season with two such foes in its first three matches.
