YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Butler kicker
Drew Bevelhimer drilled a 44-yard field goal with just four seconds on the game clock to give Butler a 23-21 victory at Youngstown State on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs stormed back to outscore the Penguins 16-0 in the fourth quarter.
Butler scored the first points of the game early in the first quarter with
Will Marty putting his head down and sneaking the ball across the goal line from one-yard out to take the 7-0 lead. A three-yard TD pass from YSU would knot the score at 7-7 and the two evenly matched teams would head to the half deadlocked.
Youngstown State would score two touchdowns through the air in the third quarter to take a 21-7 lead, but it wasn't enough as BU roared back over the final 15 to win the game.
Pace Temple took a six yard pass from Marty for a score with 9:20 left in the fourth to pull Butler within seven at 21-14. Marty would then record his third touchdown of the game and his second through the air after finding
Sam Yeaton from 12 yards out with just 1:20 to play.
Head Coach
Jeff Voris went for a two-point conversion to take the outright lead late in the game, but the attempt failed giving YSU a slim 21-20 margin.
Butler executed an onside kick attempt moments later to stay alive. Senior wide receiver
Pace Temple came up with the recovery. The Bulldogs moved the ball from their own 47 to the Youngstown 26 to get into field goal range. Bevelhimer and the rest of the special team unit would run onto the field with just four seconds left on the game clock and the Preseason All-PFL selection would drill the 44-yarder for the win!
Marty put up great numbers in the season opener throwing for 253 yards and two touchdowns. He connected on 25 of his 38 attempts and also rushed for a TD. His top target was Preseason All-PFL pick
Pace Temple who secured 14 balls for 167 yards and a score. Yeaton was Marty's second-favorite target with three catches for 29 yards and a touchdown.
The 'Dawgs played great defense in the fourth to shut out the Penguins and help secure the win.
Devin Aguilar,
Luke Sennett and
Mason Brunner all shared the team lead with seven tackles. Brunner
Joe Zuccari and Dalton Rodgers all made stops behind the line of scrimmage and freshman
Mickey Kane was credited with a fumble recovery.
The 'Dawgs will ride this momentum into next weekend when they visit the Taylor Trojans. Kick-off in Upland, Ind. is slated for 6 PM.
