Three second-half goals lifted Providence to a 3-2 win over Butler Saturday night at the Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis. Junior
Alex Lehtinen scored both goals for the Bulldogs, the first multi-goal game of his Butler career.
With the result, PC improves to 4-4-1 overall and levels its BIG EAST mark at 1-1. Butler falls to 1-5-1 and 0-2 in BIG EAST play.
Butler scored the first goal of the match off the head of Lehtinen in the 25
th minute. His header found the net just inside the left post off a free kick from freshman
Jack Haywood. It was the first point of Haywood's Butler career. The Bulldogs took that 1-0 advantage into the half despite being outshot, 9-3, by the visiting Friars. Only two of those nine PC shots were on goal as Providence was unable to convert some good looks from inside the box.
Providence found the equalizer in the 59
th minute as Andualem Chisholm took a long ball from Tristan Stowell and was able to flick it by charging Butler keeper
Gabriel Gjergji.
The tie lasted into the 76
th minute when freshman Gil Santos scored the first of two goals in a four-minute span. His first goal was a header off a cross from Brendan Constantine. Four minutes later, he collected the ball on the left side, surveyed the field, took a long touch toward the corner of the box and let a blast fly from 25 yards out that found the upper left 90.
Butler picked up the pace over the closing 10 minutes. In the 88
th minute,
Derek Sutton was taken down in the box and Butler was awarded a penalty kick, which Lehtinen converted.
A free kick and a flurry of corner kicks over the final 120 seconds could not create a clean look at the frame for the Bulldogs as Providence held on for the conference win.
Providence had a 15-10 advantage in shots, while Butler earned six corner kicks compared to four for the visitors. Both Gjergji and PC's Colin Miller each made three saves. The physical match included 31 fouls and four yellow cards. All four of the cards came in the first half.
The Bulldogs will look to rebound Wednesday at the Sellick Bowl, stepping out of BIG EAST play to host Marshall. The match is slated for 6 p.m. and will be streamed on the Butler Bulldogs Facebook page.
